Kale - easy to find?

Oops, just to add: If you go to the Lake Constance Region: Please make SURE you are western(!) of Friedrichshafen ( which means: you are not yet in Bavaria ) to shop Kale! REason: You won't be able to get Kale in Bavaria, they don't grow it!

Actually Kale, or Grünkohl is regarded as a winter vegetable everywhere except in CH where it is practically unknown.

Hmm! Getting hungry for Grünkohl mit Pinkel right now.

As I said, don't try Bavaria! It's not my fault ;-) I am German and what I can recommend it, go to Romanshorn, take the ferry boat to Friedrichshafen and go to the next REWE supermarket heading WEST! I still have a box in my freezer, so .. Bon appetit!

let's make a referendum for selling kale in migros and the coop. move the bok choys along to make some space...

Hello!! Yes.. you can find Kale when in season at the Farmer's markets. It's called Federkohl and is REALLY CHEAP!!

See you!

Vanessa

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw some at my local Migros in Uster last Saturday.

There it was, federkohl in all it's glory! And it was delicious.

For EF members living in Fribourg - I found kale in one of the organic stalls at the Saturday morning market.

I recently read somewhere that kale is one of the healthiest vegetables to eat. I'm always trying to incorporate more green veggies into our dinners. But I would have no idea how to make it. I don't even like spinach plain, so I'm sure I would only like kale if it was mixed with something else.

Does anyone have some tasty kale recipes to share? The simpler the better.

if you want to mix kale, i suggest bacon and kale. chop up and fry a pan of bacon pieces. meanwhile wash and shred kale into small fragments, put kale into bacon pan, stir it all up to mix the kale with the bacon bits and oil, lower heat, cover with lid, and let it heat for about 4-5 mins after the covered pan has heated up to cooking temperature. you will easily be able to test if the kale started to be cooked as opposed to its raw texture after a bit of experience.

i just had a plate of dinosaur kale and sausages (outside of CH)

i would never insult kale which is a top vegetable, but it's possible that dinosaur kale even beats kale

You've got to try out sukuma wiki. It is the Kenyan staple vegetable recipe. I cooked some yesterday and it was absolutely delicious:

http://www.thekitchn.com/recipe-suku...kitchn--176045

2 tips:

- For a meaty version, add minced/cubed beef to the pot when sautéeing the onions and brown together,

- Use stock instead of water.

It's so simple and really is fantastic.

My Kenyan kale recipe - Sukuma Wiki.

It might not look that great but tastes fantastic. My favorite greens recipe.

Hi. Yes kale is one of the most nutritious things there is..(it has more vitamins and minerals by weight than any other green vegetable, leafy green, etc. The most nutritious starchy vegetable is the sweet potato...)

I like to tear the ribs away from the leaves and tear the leaves up by hand. Saute over medium heat in some sesame oil, along with some garlic, onions, hot pepper. top with toasted sesame seeds and a dash of soy sauce. Saute till kale is tender and not too chewy (takes a bit longer than spinach).. great side dish...

kale shrinks in size a lot when cooked, but less than spinach...

My favorite way is raw - tear from the ribs and then cut it up finely into ribbons. Make a dressing with peanuts, apple cider vinegar, and a fairly neutral oil (plus salt and whatever else you might want to put in there - I usually use half peanuts / half peanut butter). Toss and let sit for about an hour so it softens up a bit. Enjoy!

For anyone in Basel, this is downstairs with the fruit and veg in Migros at Claraplatz, labelled Grünkohl.

What they labeled there is not Kale, unless it was already gone when I got there... They had this: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wirsingkohl.jpg

But what I am looking for is this: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Boerenkool.jpg

Anyone in Basel spotted it recently?

Hello!

I'm here in Basel... I've found it at the local market at Matthauskirche.

http://www.matthaeusmarkt.ch

Saturday 8-13:00

The Swiss call it Federkohl (or at least at this market) translation... feather cabbage. Also sometimes called Grünkohl.

It's in season NOW... for a short time. So grab it while you can.

I would also try marktplatz market... but I haven't seen it myself there.

Ciao

Vanessa

Hello everyone! Here's the proof... today at the market!

And a recipe below!!

Have fun!

Vanessa

I was in the huge Coop in Volketswil today, and I tried to find kale. But the only thing I found that I thought MIGHT be it looked more like a large cabbage. The name of it was "something kohl" and it had the curly-edged leaves, but I didn't remember kale looking like a cabbage, so I didn't get it.

What does kale usually look like when you buy it here? Is it sold in bunches, or does it look like a cabbage? I just have no idea if that thing I saw was kale or not. I did a Google image search for it, but don't see anything like a full head of "cabbage."

The thing you saw was Wirzkohl or Wirsingkohl - VonDutch above posted some links: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wirsingkohl.jpg - it tastes a lot like cabbage, but maybe a little more... I don't know.... spinachy?

But what we think of kale is Federkohl or Grunkohl: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Boerenkool.jpg - it does not come in heads, but in bunches. It is only rarely sold at Coop, and when I've seen it, it's totally overpriced and packaged in plastic. I usually find it at the farmers markets from about October to April.

There is also dinosaur kale or lacinato kale: http://www.littleworldafterall.com/w...osaur-kale.jpg - also sold in bunches, more often found in italian markets and farmers markets.

Thanks. That's right, it was called "Wirzkohl."

My search continues..................
