Unbelievable! My 5 year old daughter’s bike was stolen from the playground as she was playing and she had to walk home.

We need something other than a heart for that one…sorry, so sorry for her. She must be very upset. Reassure her that she is safe, and nothing is wrong. She can’t deal with any extra information at that age.

Make sure to check back at the place she left it, even for a couple of days. Some other child may have thought it was theirs and took it home. If there is no contact info on the bike they won’t know how to return it other than the place it was borrowed.

When I was a kid, my cousin had a tendency to come home with random things she “borrowed”, then would return them a day or two later. Took her parents quite a while to dissuade her…
Also check the area around (we recently found a “monopattino” in front of our house abandoned… after 2 weeks, we ended up bringing it to the local Migros (only shop in our village), and leaving it outside hoping the parents would find it). A few days later it was gone, so I can only hope it found it’s original owner.
Crikey, do we have to put AirTags on everything, even in CH? I’m so glad to live where people still leave their doors unlocked.
I fear no robbery. But a neighbor with some issues in the head tried to get into my apartment while I was working from home. Locking the the door since then
Bikes have always been a prime target of theft, that’s nothing new. I’d expect it to be quite the same in your area.
Though at around age 5 I’d think it’s a matter of “borrowing”, children don’t have a solid concept of ownership and therefore of theft at that age yet.
It could also have been an adult who stole it.
Of course, see my notion that bikes were always a prime target for theft.
Yes perhaps. But always have a sticker with your phone number attached. Maybe you will get a call.

We are using our local parents chats (for example, sales chats for kids clothing) to search for the stolen or lost kids items (scooters, bikes etc) or to inform about found items (like a kids bike or scooter that lays in the bushes for several days). It works perfectly. Many parents were able to find stolen scooters because the thieves are often teenagers that leave them somewhere in the village after using them.
A cryptic comment: personality traits have a heritability of 40% to 50%. I wonder if parents of child thieves showing little respect to private property vote left or right? =)
Big bold claims like that need to be linked to some solid evidence. 
The study which showed those results was for twins.
For others it’s from 9% to 18%.

My son had a scooter and one day I realised I hadn’t seen it for ages?
“Where is it?” I asked. He had absolutely no idea and it could have been stolen or he forgot he had ridden it somewhere and then walked home.
Have you gone and checked it out yourself? Any chance she left somewhere else, there is another bike left behind… I can’t count the number of times the kids forgot where they actually left bikes, kids taking the wrong bike home etc… I have had calls from other parents because their kid brought wrong bike home etc…

Yes, I went last night since I figured it was unlikely to be stolen (there’s no real value in kids’ bikes) but there was nothing there. I’m going to check again tonight. I figure if a kid took it home, their parents might have brought it back by now.
It may be a blessing in disguise, I’ve been trying to tell my kids that when we go on holiday they have to stay with me and be more careful as we will be in big cities and they can’t go running off on their own. So it was a timely lesson in being careful! 
Have you created a ticket in Lost & Found? Someone might have found it and brought to your Gemeindeverwaltung.
Good news! I went again yesterday and the bike had been returned! I found it in the play area (rather than the bike parking where it was left). It seemed to have been used and bashed about a bit but no major damage! Daughter was happy to get her bike back!

Possible, it was put back in the bike parking after mistakenly been taken by a young child, and then someone else decided to misuse it and damage it.
Good you got it back though and your daugher is happy.
