Hi, As I understand it, your child, unless going private/international, must attend kindergarten within the local gemeinde, is there a way around this ? my son will start this year, but the only one that provides all day care, within our gemeinder area, is not really, and I wonder can I send him to one under another gemeinde, or is this a no no !! nothing to do with the quality, really hours and geography.
As far as I know, you will have to use the Kindergarten allocated to you within your Gemeinde. Are you sure that there is no suitable day care? In our previous Gemeinde, although small, children were picked up from the various Kindergartens and taken to the various day care options, although only one Kindergarten was located with the Krippe.
My colleague that lives in Zürich sent her boy to kindergarten outside her geminde and near the grandparents so they could collect him while she was at work, so it is possible.
you should also look into having him in the apems (not sure about the spelling) which is like an after school program- my son goes twice a week and likes it, not sure how it works for kindergarten but there must be other mama's in the area in the same boat, ask them what they do and maybe there is some kind of program at least!
yes, the only one that offers, day care, is in the local area but up the mountain about 25 min drive from our home, but I would really like to leave him in one closer to the house, but cannot find daycare close by, there appears to be nothing like kinderkrippes / hort under our gemeinder, but just 100 meters down the road is another kindergarten that offers care, and a second that works along side a local KITA but they fall under another gemeinder ! Now he is at a kinderkrippe close to my work but the distance is to far to collect and bring hiom there.
thanks guys, very encouraging hearing about your colleague Mariezug, gives hope, the gemeinde when I asked, simply said no, and no way to discuss really! We are not in our new place so long, so I haven't got to know other mums, but it's what I keep saying, surely not everyworking mother has family close by to help out, must be more like me I am starting to wish we never moved, but I thought I had it sussed, and could send him up the road, I wouldn't mind, but we made the decision to move, as a case of " before kindergarten or never" Lord I have to do this makes friends thing, I am starting to struggle, since my best friends went back to the UK, I now realise that apart form me, hubby and son, I really am alone she, her parents and little girl, were my "family" here, and I know, Igotta make the effort! but my german is improving finally after 9 years
According to the law (Volksschulgesetz des Kantons St. Gallen), it is possible to attend school or kindergarten in another Gemeinde if the distance to home is to far away.
I think you should try again, refer to article 53 and tell them that you are in urgent need for day care.
Be aware, that the Gemeinde will probably be rather reluctant, because they will have to pay the other Gemeinde.
Sorry, I couldn't find an english Version, but here is the relevant article in German.
b) auswärtiger Schulbesuch
Art. 53.
In short, yes, it is possible, but there may be canton or local regulations on what exactly is possible, so check out your particular area.
Our neigbors sent their kids to public school in another canton even, but I think that they had to pay at least part if not all of this cost. Be aware that you may have to pay as well.
Another option to investigate is if your child can attend your school, but go the after-school activities at the other place. You normally have to pay for these extras anyhow. My child goes to the after school program 1x per week at a school two villages away because there is nothing in our village. I pay for this, and the other is glad to take her. It works out well.
thanks everyone, simplon, this is very usefull, you have all made me decide to not accept the first reply they gave me, and give it a good try, sending him up a mountain to me is madness, just because I have to work, and it's a mountain in the wrong direction I don't mind paying part costs, I have been paying kinderkrippe for 3 years anyway, so whats another few
You don't have to pay even a part of the costs. Public kindergarten is for free (except some minor expenses, usually not more than 100 francs a year). But of course you have to pay for the tagesschule/krippe.
thanks to everyone,Today received the good news that my son can attend the kindergarten 5 minutes walk form our house, (but another gemeinde) once he has secured a place at the KITA close by, which is not a big problem as it only involves transfer form 1 KITA close to my work, to KITA closer to home, and same gemeinde as kindergarten, so I am on cloud nine.
