Kita Meals

Hi everyone!

Quick question regarding meals at Kita’s. Our little one is going to start kita full day and our daycare only provides vegan meals. Is this a normal thing? Does this happen in all kitas? I thought kitas normally provide meals with all ingredients and offer alternatives instead for vegans vegetarians and other allergies..

seems like this is a way for them to save money more then anything, but I don’t believe this is nutritious enough eating fruit 3 times a day...

Thanks!

Don’t know about in Switzerland, but in the U.K. my step-sister sent her kids to a vegetarian nursery. I assume they also offer options for those with allergies. Can you not find one that isn’t vegan?

It is very very unusual in Switzerland, so find another one.

It would have been a dream for my grandson, who is dangerously allergic to eggs. Cross contamination in kita is so easy, as kids do not understand.

Very strange and would have annoyed me also. Are you sure this is the case? Do they advertize it as a vegan Kita?

Do you really think each and every Kita can provide normal,. vegetarian and vegan meals not counting lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant or any other fad intolerant.

Kita's are small, very low if non existent profit margins.

Find another Kita for burger & fries

Just impossible for sure. Daugther had to provide packed lunch to ensure no egg. But a little friend (3 year old) gave him a peck on the lips after lunch - and he ended up with the full epipen and ambulance with all light on to Casualty, unable to breathe.

For him, a vegan nursery would have been ideal, so no cross contamination. But life is life, and he has been kept safe, active, happy, sporty- having a great life, but with restricitions they have all adjusted to, us included when he visits.

It's great to hear that alternatives are available. If it does not suit OP- then yes, they need to find another one.

We live in a small town and it was really hard to get a place in this one.. in total there are 2

They don’t advertise it as such no... they said it’s due to dietary and religious restrictions, which I get but I think there should be options for those who eat everything. it’s just annoying because it’s already so pricey and you would hope for a full day her meals would be covered, but now we have to cook and bring food with us every day. Veg just doesn’t offer some nutrients as meat does and for a growing body I think this is disappointing as they don’t seem to care about nutritional value all together. I feel like this is a way to save money more then anything.

I don’t really care about their profit. The kita costs 3k up, I’m sure if they provide fries they should provide a burger

I agree with you totally!

Maybe it’s a trendy way of marketing a meal plan that doesn’t contain all the expensive stuff that eats into their profits (meats, cheeses, dairy)? Easier to package it as ‘vegan’.

It should be definitely advertised as Vegan, so people can make an informed choice. I'd say that legally, you should be able to break the contract easily, as they failed to make this clear. Is there another Kita locally you can move your child to? That is what I would do.

I don’t think vegans just eat veg Why don’t you ask them for a sample menu?

Maybe they used the plant based “fake meat” - which is actually as expensive as real meat. I’ve used it in dishes when cooking for veggies and seemed just like the real thing and also was high in protein.

Vegan is quite a commitment - are you sure it's really vegan or just vegetarian ?

I don't know how old the children are but under 2 most kids are having either breasmilk or formula...

Eating one 'vegan' meal a day does not necessarily mean it is inadequate - I would ask them for two month's menu plan so you can see an example of what is actually offered.

Is the Kita ordering in catered food or are they cooking on-site, or a combination of both ? In the Kita's where I have worked or placed my children they did monthly and weekly menu planning for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea every day and these had to be nutritionally balanced across all the food groups and with a broad variety...

To be dedicated Vegan if they are using a commercial supplier who provides the food/nutritional balance and expertise I'd be comfortable with that. But if it's being done 'in house' without a professional chef, I would be a little bit worried....

And as others have said, vegan does not necssarily mean fruit and vegetables. Beans, Legumes, all sorts of grains, herbs, spices, and a wide variety of oils and fats can be plant-derived, as well as protein such as tofu, quorn (very popular in Kitas as a 'vegetarian' option) are possible.... if your child is having milk at home 2/day then they are getting plenty of dairy.... and that would be normal for up to age 2-3.

Of course. Instead of saying, hey we don't give a damn about nutrition, here eat some rice and peas, they say they "cater to all kinds of dietary and religious restrictions", which they don't, because if they did they'd serve meat

First of all, i know vegan is not just fruit and veg. im not gonna list all the foods vegans eat. second of all, they aren't serving any vegan meat, please. i know exactly what they serve. it's a small old kita in a small town, this isnt about zurich

maybe they just cook to the lowest common denominator. vegans, nut allergies, gluten free, etc. then build a menu with that. such an approach avoids having to make special meals for a handful of people because now all the meals are now special for those special little ones!

I'm sorry but what are you talking about.. what kids drink mainly milk until 2-3 years, are you okay? Kids start solids at 6 months, the intake of milk goes down but 9-12 months and kids move on to cow's milk for the nutritional value, but they don't drink it all day.

If you are one of the people who breastfeed their kids until they turn grey, then just ignore my comment this is clearly not for you. There is a reason why weaning starts at 6 months cause formula or breastmilk doesn't provide sufficient nutrients for your body.

And vegan is not a commitment, it's a lot cheaper and easier to justify then cater to all dietery needs.

I said my child is there all day not for one meal, that is not one meal a day. that's 2 meals plus 2 snacks and fruit rounds. this is not adequate, the amount of sugar and carbs kids get is not good. children between 6-12 months need 11 grams of protein, they need calcium, iron, b12 vitamin and this is important for their bones and teeth, not 3 rounds of sugary fruit.

They have a lady who comes in and cooks every day.

I know what vegan means, im not interested in listing all the stuff vegans eat. this diet lacks of nutrients found in meats, thats why vegans supplement a lot of what they cant get. kita doesnt supplement anything, doesnt give out vitamins and that's the end of it.

Why is this an issue?

I for sure am a carnivore, but I certainly do not see a problem with one vegan meal a day.

How many days is your child at the KITA? Also, did you speak to them about the menu choice?

Sort of a agree with St2lemans IF it's just one day a week and the rest of the week she's eating a diet balanced with meat and dairy.

If it's a full 5 days of 3 x vegan meals, that might be a concern. Also from an iron / B12 issue, as well as the calcium in a growing child.
