Kitchenware and Home Stuff!

Hi guys,

Since I'm new and I'm living in a students residence, i will have to start looking for a few things. First of all and most important is some kitchenware...

Do you have any advice?

Also, I'm living in Loorenstrasse, is there any good( this means cheap!) supermarket nearby?

Any advice is welcome!

There's a Denner at the bottom of your street . That's about as cheap as it gets in Switzerland.

Otherwise, there are cheap supermarkets only 45 mins drive away to the north.

Kitchenware: go to a secondhand shop ("Brocki" or "Brockenhaus") or to Ikea.

If you can find a Turkish supermarket near you (or on your way home from university) they are often cheaper, especially on meat, fruit and veg. Otherwise, Denner is your best bet (but often doesn't have a full line of groceries, e.g. ours doesn't have lentils), Migros second-best and Coop is the most expensive of the three.

If you fancy a trip to Basel, I can let you have (for free) most items of crockery (dinner plates, smaller plates, coffee cups,mugs, a teapot (vital if you are British ) bowls, glasses, wine glasses).

I also have an espresso/cappucino machine that you are welcome to (it runs on ordinary ground coffee) and a pizza tray for the oven. What I do not have however is cutlery and pans.

If this is the sort of thing you are after, and anyone else in Basel can add to the stash, I would be happy to take delivery of it so you can just make one pick up.

Otherwise yes, Ikea I think do starter sets which will not be expensive.

Today went to IKEA and got almost everything.

I'm planning going to a big Migros tomorrow @ Kreuzplatz and got the other things.

Thanks a LOT ecb but i can't go to basel right now. I WILL go 4 sure in the future.

Now I'm looking for a boiler and a toaster 4 my room, any recommendations?

Try the shopping centre at Witikon - there's a big Migros down the back. It's a big closer than Kreuzplatz.

But you *will* save money if you adapt to purchasing at Denner. It took us a year to learn to fill our Denner trolley (which is rather small) for under 100chf, but we did it...

Also, try Coop on Tuesdays after 3pm, that's when they mark the meat down 50% - they do it on other days too, but Tuesday always seemed to be the best when we were living there...

If by 'boiler' you mean 'kettle' then I got one at Migros a couple of months ago for 10chf! Toaster, I got one for about 3chf at the brockenhaus. It works fine...

If you really are a student on a tight budget, adapt to buying from the 'Brockenhaus' - (charity/second hand shops) - There is one in Seefeld called 'Tigel' and the Zuricher Brockenhaus, and Brocki-land. Brocki-land is a bit of a hike to get there, but no worse than Ikea, with a lot more potential for picking up bargains...
