Labeling for animal treatment in food and fashion products becomes mandatory on 01.07.2025

Starting on July 1st, food retailers, restaurants and fashion shops should tell the customers via labeling if the products on sale involved animal suffering.

By mandating these disclosures, the Swiss government says it is “increasing transparency for consumers, enabling them to make informed purchases.” A two-year transition period has been granted to implement the changes.

I’m curious to see this new labeling in food and how this is added to restaurant menus.

@axa:wink:

I’m bit worried. This is a very polarizing issue. All good?

I think they should mention human suffering too.

I’m looking at you Lindt.

I don’t really see a problem other than it is a level of bureaucracy that is maybe unnecessary. Many people choose not to think about the conditions in an abattoir, many youngsters choose veganism because they are aware. There have been huge positive changes in animal welfare. On a wider note, if it is necessary to subsidise Swiss agriculture, why not make it all organic?

No everyone wants organic. Chocolate manufacturers, for example, generally do not use organic milk.

I suspect that if they did, they would kindly pass the price hike on to the consumer.

I also see no problems, but curious changes. I bet people with lots of free time will push Migros to only sell products up to X standards. Funny conversations in restaurants and looks when someone orders Y dish with extra animal suffering.

Also, there’s a a cultural implication where customs converge to Halal/Kosher. I wonder if I should I start a laic food label.

What about lipstick?

Well, we started beekeeping because of the possibilities to help sustainably nature… in the last years, I have received ‘hate mail’ (in our beekeeping email acount), stating that we are animal abusers, and all bees should be free, and it’s not just the ‘odd-ball’… hence my tongue-in-cheek photo…

Backed to that “human-hate” again. We’re all animals. I wish these people would be consistent.

Ahhh, is there people out there advocating for the freedom of bees? No way…

For me, it’s only something curious. My family background from both sides is farming. Killing of domestic and butchering of domestic animals is part of the heritage. I know my way with poultry. Maybe I should spend some time with the uncles that know what to do with lambs and pigs. As long as we kill to sustain ourselves it’s OK. Wasting any animal derived food is the problem because it means the killing was for nothing.

I just shut up when people tell me how I only meat because I don’t anything about the cruelty of abattoirs. A reply in the direction of “I’ve done it with my own hands” is not optimal in any social setting where people grandstands about animal rights. But, no risk of ruining the mood during dinner…this is the internet

Yes, there are colours for all the tastes…check out “free the bees” webiste (domain is .ch ) and read it yourself… according to them, apis mellifera mellifera (European honey bee) should be back to feral.

Disclaimer: I don’t know if the hate email came from anybody related to this organization!

and, yes, my grandfather had cattle - and bees, so @Axa , I align totally

This. Ranch animals are always kept with love and respect, and when we slaughter, there is nothing wasted.

I myself am all for freebies.
