Lamb for Curries ... Where to Buy?

Greetings all,

I was wondering if anyone would know where I could buy some Lamb or Mutton to cook in a curry? Got some mates coming over this weekend and want to cook a Rogan Josh.

I would prefer Mutton as it is better for stewing and perfect for curries. I also find that is has a weaker flavour than normal tender Lamb and goes well with spices. It is normally cheaper than tender cuts of Lamb and tougher and needs to be cooked for a longer time. It can't be eaten pink as you would normal Lamb.

If it's Goat that you're looking for, search below thread:

Many thanks

Schafs Fleisch - Mutton. . . I bought some, years ago, sadly I can't poinpoint exactly where, sorry

Did you try Globus ? Or perhaps one of the more exotic food stores in Josefstrasse ?

Best

Nick

Cheers Nick. Great suggestion. I'll make my way to Josefstrasse to hunt for it!

I wonder where all the Indian restaurants get theirs from?

There's a thread on the forum listing all the ethnic shops, one of them is bound to have some, and much cheaper than Globus.

Have a look in the freezer of you local Indian shop, they normally have Lamb that is suitable for long slow cooking in there. The Lamb takes a bit of preparation as it comes in a big lump & not already cubed but it is usually quite tasty.

Good idea Richdog. I suppose I'll set aside a couple of hours one afternoon this week to visit a few.

Cheers Lou. I normally go to Aggarwals on Langstrasse. I'll ask them if they've got some. Many thanks.

I just want to add Lou's link to this thread, I was going to merge but then Lou's question was asking for non specific meat whereas this one is - so hopefully the link will be helpful

Hey

As an British-Indian living here and enjoying a lamb curry once in a while, I find that using the neck fillet works quite well - which is on action in Coop at the moment - or the leg fillets that you can get as well.

(off to make my lamb tagine for dinner now with the lamb fillet from Coop - yummy )

Cheers for the tip Hems. For curries I prefer it on the bone. I find it adds a lot more flavour. Hope I can get some.

Enjoy your Tagine!

Just realised today that my local Indian shop has 1KG of frozen lamb for 15 CHF... can't remember what the name of the place is though. End of Uetlibergstrasse.

Thanks Richdog, any idea what tram to take to get there?

Cheers

13 or 5 to Sihl City Nord (easy one) and then walk down towards Giesshubel trainstation under the big bridge and right to the end until it starts to intersect with another road. The Indian Shop is dead on the corner on the left.

I went there on Sunday with a mate and the dude running it looked absolutely ****ed on something or other... could barely understand what he said (though he one solitary tooth whih probably didn't help). Then he kind of shambled over to us and started to pour these seeds in our hand to taste and spilled them everywhere. My mate tried not to grimace when he gave her some bare handed, and she even swallowed a few hehe. Nice, harmless chap though despite whatever he was on, and i'll go back there next week to get some stuff. Oh, he also speaks a little English too, as I found out at the end. They also sell PG Tips.

Shameless plug, Zurich 'foods of the world' shopping tour Saturday 31st October. It's on the forum calendar.

They have some great lamb at the Turkish supermarket on Josefstrasse 53. EGE.

Also, try Barkat Cash and Carry. Birmensdorferstrasse 141.

Both are very accessable by public transport.

I can highly recommend the lamb shanks. They cost about 5chf each, but they have *heaps* of meat on them...and the butcher even offered to cut them smaller for me...

Thank you all for all your help. I bought some excellent stewing lamb today.

I went to http://www.aggarwal.ch/ this afternoon and was well impressed. Not only did I get the Lamb for my curries, I also got so many other spices and ingredients. The new store is not on Langstrasse 62 as they have changed that into a takeaway which I hope to try next time round. The new store is 2 minutes away on Kernstrasse 27.

They also have lots of Asian and African cuisine ingredients.

I'll be cooking a fantastic Rogan Josh this weekend! By the way, Lamb is sold in 1 kilo packets costing 13 francs per kilo. It's available both on the bone (my preference) and off the bone. This is a one stop shop, you can get almost everything Indian here.
