Laundromats in canton Zurich?

Hi everyone,

Does anyone happen to know whether laundromats (where you can do multiple loads of laundry yourself while you wait) are common in zurich and, particularly, whether there is one in Seefeld? I can't find any on this anywhere and haven't stumbled across one yet.

Thanks in advance for any info that you might have!

Hmm, you'll be lucky. These places were rare enough years ago; it just isn't a Swiss thing. The last one I knew of wasn't in Seefeld but near Sonneggstrasse tram stop for the 15 tram. It had a bar school next door where you could pop in and have an apprentice barman create a decent drink for CHF5 while you waited for your sheets to wash. Many an interesting night spent at the self-service laundry.

Both have closed.

Most professional laundrys - and they are everywhere in Seefeld - are reasonably priced.

.... and by laundromat I mean the type where you can come and use the machines, not the kind where they do the washing for you. Can anybody suggest a place? My apartment building has a schedule of when tenants are allowed to do the washing, and since my time is saturday morning I'm developing a bit of a pile.

I don't remember seeing laundromats around. At home they only exist in student bedsitland where people have no washing machines in their tiny flats.

Try the second on this list ... it would appear to be a self-service laundry.

If it is what you're looking for, could you let us know?

It's official - laundromats are an endangered species in Zurich.

The linked article is from 2008 but gives a brief review of some laundromats still standing:

Birmensdorferstr. 219 : modern machines. Post-it notes of unsatisfied customers on the wall. Winterthurerstr. 62 : old machines, clean, the most expensive, well-maintained and many magazine. Call 044 361 60 98 to investigate if this laundromat is still around. Sihlfeldstr. 88 : The biggest, busiest and cheapest one, well maintained machines, parking space available fin

Why the groan? I have never seen one, is it a groanable offence, to comment and compare? I really don't get your logic.

Yep, this one's still open - I noticed it this afternoon.

I used the one in Birmensdorferstrasse when we first moved here becaus ehte washing in our house (landlord's machine) was broken. That was 4 years ago but the place was OK, lots of washers and dryers there.

Hi,

I was in Zürich for a few weeks in May on a business + personal trip. EF was great reading material for me while I was in Switzerland

The hotel laundry had astronomical per-piece prices, so I did a bit of research on affordable laundry options. Here's my contribution back to the community in hopes that it will be useful to others. FYI, another option is drop-off laundry -- no experience personally, but I met another tourist couple who told me that they used a reasonably-priced drop-off laundry place in the Zürich Airport train station.

Didn't visit this one, but here's the Google Street View link .

I went to this laundromat twice. Its name is Lea's Waschhaus (Selbstbedienung), which I learnt from Google Translate is Lea's Self-Service Wash House.

Prices (as of May 2010 when I went)

9 Washing Machines 30 °C -- 30 minutes -- CHF 5.80 40 °C -- 40 minutes -- CHF 6.20 60 °C -- 45 minutes -- CHF 6.60 95 °C -- 50 minutes -- CHF 7.20

4 Dryers 15 minutes -- CHF 2.40 45 minutes -- CHF 6.80

Miscellaneous No change machine, but there are shops along Badenerstrasse where I got change. Vending machine sold laundry powder (CHF 1.00) and fabric softener (CHF 0.50). Alternatively there's a Coop ( Coop - Google Street View ) among the shops on Badenerstrasse.

Directions

From downtown Zürich where I was, I took Tram 2 from Börsenstrasse (Direction Farbhof) and got off at the Lochergut stop ( Google Street View - Lochergut ). You will see a big shopping complex on the right. Walk north along Börsenstrasse and turn right on Sihlfeldstrasse. Lea's Waschhaus is next to the hair salon, among the small row of shops ( Lea's Waschhaus - Google Street View ).

Hours

According to the signage, the hours are Mon-Sat from 7am to 8:30pm, but at the top it says "offen bis 22.00 Uhr" which Google tells me means "open until 10pm"? My guess is that the last wash is 8:30pm and the laundromat closes at 10pm, but I've never stayed that late.

I think i have seen one between Rigiblick Station on Winkelriedstrasse Station

from the Tram No.10 (when you go to the airport on the right )

I was in Zurich last November and used a laundromat which is not listed in the posts above.

If you zoom in, you will see the words Selbstbedienungs-Waschsalon (Self Service Wash Salon) on the window -- that's the place.

It's on the line for tram #9, near the Goldbrunnenplatz stop.

Prices were similar to what jleh posted. This one was not that great -- not all of the machines were in working condition, there was no soap available for purchase (and nowhere near that I could find to buy some -- I borrowed some from another customer) and I ran out of change before my clothes were dry so I ended up taking a bag of damp clothes back to my hotel -- OK, that last one was my fault.

I'm going back in October so I will try one of the others that jleh posted -- thank you for the informative post!

Resurrecting an old thread, I know.

Does anybody know, if these still exist ?

Birmensdorferstr. 219 : Winterthurerstr. 62 : Sihlfeldstr. 88 : Thanks, Doc.

The one on Winterthurerstr. does; I don't know about the other two. Have you tried phoning them?

I was yesterday in Winterthurerstr. .Saturday morning it was nearly empty, 5 washing machines were ok, one broke and three tumbler operational. Paid for 35mins-60°C washing 9SFr. and 7SFr. for the tumbler (I bought the washing soap before).

There is also one at Badenerstrasse 655, not sure if it's still up and running.

I just went to Sihlfeldstr. 88 today, and it is still open and fully functioning.

Reporting from the laundromat at Winterthurerstr. 62 on a Sunday afternoon. When I arrived, there were two people, but they were already finishing, now I'm the only customer.

It's right in front of the Kinkelstrasse tram station. Tram no.10 (Main train station-Airport / HB-Flughafen) and no.9 stops here.

Open Mon-Sun 7-22 !

6 machines work out of the 7

3 take 5kg of clothes, 2 take 6kg:

30 degrees C: 8 CHF ca. 25 min

40 degrees C: 8 CHF ca. 30 min

60 degrees C: 9 CHF ca. 35 min

90 degrees C: 9 CHF ca. 45 min

1 machine takes 10kg, but it's more expensive:

30-40 degrees C: 15 CHF

60-90 degrees C: 17 CHF

3 tumble dryers:

3.5 min = 1 CHF, which means 1 washing machine load 5-6kg = 5-7 CHF, 18-25 min

There is a vending machine for soap and softener: 1 CHF for soap, 1.5 CHF for soap+softener and there is also another item in the machine, it looks like it's a folded plastic bag? - it costs 0.5 CHF.

There is a money changing machine, it accepts coins and bills and gives 1Fr coins.

Not too many magazines, but I brought my laptop :-)

This one is closed and is being converted into some kind of electronics shop

The one on Sihlfeldstr. 88 thankfully remains open

According to this article , there are now only two laundromats/coin op laundries remaining in Zurich:

Winterthurerstrasse 62 / 8006 Zürich

and

Sihlfeldstr. 88 Lochergut / 80004 Zürich
