Does anybody know that when you rent an appartment in Zurich, Can you bring your own washer and dryer. I have been lookiing at the homegate page and there is no mention of this at all, so I assume you can just bring your own washer and dryer and use them as you like.
I don't usually manage to write such long posts, but I am currently finding all these vitally important things to do to avoid doing any work!!
We've just had our washing machine installed that we brought with us from Spain. It's not as simple as just connecting it and away you go - well, it is if you don't mind hassle with your landlord or home insurance. This is what we had to do to install our washing machine (and goes for all appliances that need connection to water mains, so I suppose the dryer is a different drumload of clothes!):
You need to check that your machine fits in your flat - ours didn't and my husband spent many a jolly hour rebuilding our kitchen cupboard (and down at Migros Do-it !!) so that it did, ensuring of course that when we leave we can leave it looking exactly the same as when we moved in! You need to get in touch with your landlord (or Verwaltung). We live in a block of flats with a Verwaltung - if your flat is privately owned this may not apply. We were sent an added clause (contract?) to our rental contract to sign and return, in which we had to agree to not hang wet clothes in the flat, not put on the machine between such and such a time, and on public holidays, and a long etc. We then had to return the 2 signed copies of the contract, send them back to the Verwaltung, who then signed them and sent us back one copy!!! Contact an Electrician and a Plumber: electrician - changed plug, 5 mins, approx 65 francs. Plumber (same one as had caused our bathroom tap to spring a leak on a Saturday night at 10.00 pm, and no we did't know where to turn the mains off )- 3 visits later and eventually we had to get the boss in himself to connect the pipe to the water supply!!So what should have taken 10 minutes turned into a saga - don't know how many minutes(!!) approx 100 francs (he offered to not charge us - nice thought!!) but unfortunately we needed the bill to verify that somebody 'qualified' had done job! So we got a reduced bill! Could I just add that my husband used to do all this himself in our rented flat in Spain, but here in Switzerland, what could have taken maybe max. 30 mins, took us a few days and a few phone calls and emails longer!!
Thumbs up for those who are home owners and do not have to wade through these bureaucratic nightmares. May I just add that we love it here in Switzerland (apart from these 'little' problems we encounter on occasions!).
