I think most cities outside CH now how to throw a New Years' Party.
For me, it was summed up by the SSF-DRS television coverage of the turning of the year.
For the hours leading up to midnight, there was the big, multi-national Germanic-speaking TV extravaganza that is Musikantenstadl -- then 5 mins. before midnight, it switched to a Swiss village church with an organist and a girl playing the alphorn - everyone else had forgotten to turn-up. Then it moved to a restaurant, with a few oldies dancing about a bit, and the younger ones swaying from side-to-side on their chairs, with the traditional Swiss "oom-pah" quartet playing away in the background. Ten minutes later, it went back to Austria (Musikantenstadl), and people having fun, again.
[N.B. I was subjected to this for the benefit of the wife - the London firework spectacular, was obviously an hour later].
When I questioned that this was maybe a bit staid for New Year, my wife replied that this is what the people want and are used to.
Hopefully in ZH, GE, and BE there was a bit more of a party.
