Has anyone done the Lausanne marathon? Are there toilets at the aid stations? Nothing shows on the course map and I’ve emailed them, but no reply.
Anyone done the Luzern marathon? Is the hilly bit tough? Is doing 2 laps mentally tough?
Thanks

I’ve done the Luzern. Two laps is absolutely fine. I too thought it would be tough doing two laps but it was absolutely no problem. It’s not hilly.
The warm showers at the end were welcome when I did it. I wore long trousers as it was so cold.
I’ve never done the Lausanne marathon, but I live there and went to watch the race several times.
You’ll get plenty of toilets and places to change and store your stuff around the departure area (they add many of those ‘portakabin’ thingies). I’m not sure what you’re looking for exactly though: toilets during the race? That I don’t remember seeing. There are several drinking points though, where volunteers offer you glasses of water.
Hope this helps? I’ll be happy to answer more detailed questions about Lausanne should you need it!
I’ve done both, multiple times. At both, there are approximately 2 - 3 places on route with a toi toi (and lots at the start). If just peeing, there will also be a few places with bushes or hedgerows, or a wall, that you see both sexes using, no big deal.
Both courses count as flat marathons, though there are gentle rolling hills, perhaps a little more on Lausanne though not much in it. Luzern has one uphill section that I recall, that of course you have to do on both laps.
If it is your first marathon I recommend Lausanne… lovely scenery if the weather is clear with vineyards on one side and lake / mountains on the other, plus you don’t have to do the two loops. Luzern has it’s highlights too though, running through the interior of the KKL and through the football stadium.
I’ve done the 1OK in Lausanne, so I know about the pre and post race facilities. Never noticed the on course toilets because for 55 mins it wasn’t an issue. Not sure I can do 4.5 hour marathon without needing a pee though - just has me worried that they are not shown on course map. Luzern has loads.
I need an end of summer marathon, because I live in the mountains and training in winter is too difficult. Most marathons seem to be in April/May though
The Nordic Walking map shows the entire 10km, but no toilets other than start and finish.
Yep, none of the course maps show toilets. Which is why I’m asking the question. It’s quite unusual for a marathon course not to have any, so not sure if they just haven’t put them on the map or there aren’t any.
Anyway, Lausanne can’t be bothered to answer my email, so think I’ll do Luzern.
Was my answer above somehow invisible? There are toilets on both routes, just not that many. I’m not aware of many or any course maps that highlight en-route toilet facilities.
Just checked the Zurich marathon route pdf (that I ran yesterday). Same thing, no toilets highlighted.
It’s visible. However the 2024 map/sketch shows toilets at start and finish, and at these two locations only. That invites the thought that your experience may not apply this year.
Well done! How was it in the cold and wet? Unpleasant?
Plus sleet and light snow. For the last 4km I could no longer feel my hands, even in gloves. Legs seized up somewhat in the final kms too, no doubt also due to the conditions.
But all good! Type II fun as they say, and which I am sure you recognise well
Not on the Zürich route map - but in the FAQs " mobile toilets are deposited at each refreshment/medical station".
Another example Valencia (scroll to bottom map and see legend) Course Valencia Marathon Trinidad Alfonso
The description of Type II fun completely misses the overwhelming bliss of a hot shower and eating as if there’s no tomorrow after coming down the mountain. Stretching for lactic acid? Noooo, give me 2 beers and I’m in heaven just before falling sleep in an uncomfortable position.
Looking back over the years, Type II type fun has definitely been the most memorable.
