We would be relocating to Lausanne later this year and was wondering if anyone could give us some tips on the different neighbourhoods. We are a couple expecting a new-born in April next year and would like to live somewhere that is calm and peaceful but at the sametime close to the shops and public transport.
- which are the nice neighbourhoods to live in , where to avoid, is housing generally more affordable than Geneva/Zurich and if so, what would be the average rent for a 3-4 bedroom apartment in a new building ?
it might be worth posting on that thread too, in case some people have email notifications when it's updated. You can copy this thread as a link and invite them over to comment?
Dont worry lausanne is so small that you can even walk across the city(well, almot). I would suggest to find somewhere by the lake, the view is beautiful in those areas. There are also a few little towns around lausanne that worth having a look at, such as Morges, Montreux, Lutry, etc, but you will need two cars of course.
I attached an example so you can have a look. Well I need to clarify that I m not advertising anything here, this is just an ad i saw on the intranet for those expats in my company. Actually I found this rent is far above the average in Lausanne...
Hi, I am looking moving to Bussigny near Lausanne(wife and two kids 2.5 yrs and 5 months). would be interested in getting some information on this area.
good neighborhoods & ave rent for 3 bed house/appart.
I particularly like the area to the east of lausanne, between lausanne- montreux ,the villages in the lavaux vineyards and close to lake eg pully, lutry, La conversion, Croix sur Lutry, Belmont sur lausanne. easy commute into town with lovely lake views and good schools, local and international. If you go onto one of the estate agents websites you will be able to search for apartments and get an idea of price. eg http://www.bernard-nicod.ch/index.asp ? or http://www.domicim.ch/
I missed this thread first time around, I'm glad I've now seen it.
As for lake views in Lausanne, you do not need to be near the lake to get one because the terrain generally slopes up from the lake, allowing most buildings to get a view in much of the city.
A 3-4 bedroom apartment in a new building will probably cost in the region of 1800-2500 CHF per month. It's normally a bit higher in the quieter villages and towns outside of the city (e.g., Lutry, Morges, etc).
It shouldn't be hard to find something close to public transport, the city buses run to all parts of town and beyond. Getting something close to a CFF / SBB train station might be more difficult, though.
The area a few kms west of the centre of Lausanne (Prilly, Renens, Ecublens, Bussigny) is generally the cheapest district and is the one that you can find more apartments available in than any other. However, this is explained by the fact that it is not as attractrive as other parts of town (lots of 1970s expansion suburbs and large commercial and industrial units), and a smaller proportion of places there will have a view simply due to the terrain.
The rental market isn't too bad right now, and certainly not nearly as bad as I hear that it is in Geneva and Zurich. However, don't expect to be given the first place that you apply for, and if you want something really ideal then you may have to work at it pretty hard for a few weeks.
The best way to find a place is to check www.zannonces.ch , which includes postings from all of the agencies plus private listings. Ignore any posts that are more than a few days old, because they've probably been taken. The best thing is to phone places the same day that they get posted on there. Good luck!
I am shortly comming out to stay Lausanne and will be working in Bussigny for Nestle. I understand that I can get a train there, does anyone know about the journey, costs, etc
Depends on where you are taking the train from.... If you want to go from Lausanne, you will have to change in Renens. You can take the train then a bus to the very near the complex. I think it might be too far to walk from the train station. But you could also take the number 7 bus or the M1 and then take the 35 bus... again, it depends on where you are leaving from.
I work in Bussigny (pres Lausanne) lots of trains from Lausanne main station and takes about 15 mins. I didn't know Nestle had offices in Bussigny. It is also close to the motorway so easy to get from most places. There are a lot of nice villages close by or so I am told.
I ended up settling in Le Mont Sur Lausanne which is about 10 KM away but takes 10 - 15 mins in the car.
