Learning French in/nearby to Neuchatel

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on good places to sign up to in order to learn French.

My husband and I have heard that the Canton offers some sort of integration programme for non-French speakers, but we can't seem to find any information on this.

Had anyone had experience of these 'intensive' courses that seem to immerse you for a week or so?

Any advice / links / past experiences would be gratefully received.

Thanks :-)

Recif Neuchatel good institution... Inexpensive too....

Google it..... G'luck

Thanks Sapin. There seems to be a waiting list, but it's worth looking into.

Any other ideas from other French learners out there are very welcome :-)

It's not a bad idea to go to the Café des Langues every Tuesday evening at the Café du Cerf - you can practise French, English, German and probably Italian and even Spanish (maybe) for free with other people who want to speak. Free speaking practice, at least!

Ecole Migros is your best bet, I think. Or the Balkan School of English.

The cafe looks really good, but the problem is our French is minimal (mine possibly slightly better than hubby), so conversation at this stage would be tricky. But could be worth a try, as you say Kamarate.

Yes, we looked into Ecole Migros. Seemed to be cheaper than others we saw! Thanks Odile :-)

Technically it''s ALF Ecole des Langues (link here ) for the other languages

EDIT: If you want to tell me your goals/learning styles then I can probably recommend the best teacher for your individual needs. You can also do "semi-private" lessons so you can learn together if your levels are not wildly different.

I did a French course at Ecole Migros. My advise is to look for a class that takes place at least twice a week. The more the better. I'd like to find a class in the mornings when my kids are at school. Afternoon and evening classes are complicated for us!

Hi !

Do you still want to learn french ? If you are interested, I can help you to improve your french and I would like you to help me to improve my english in exchange.

I'm a Swiss woman (41) with french tongue language. I work in a hospital and I live in Neuchâtel. I'm interested in various activities like hiking, swimming, dancing, cultural outings...

I would be happy to read you... :-)

Hello Cristalumineux,

I will gladly take you up on your offer if it's still available and if you are still free.

I find that I need a language exchange / tandem partner so I can speak to someone in French on a semi-regular basis; most importantly someone who will correct my mistakes.

Let me know if you'd like to do a tandem session sometime. We could meet at a cafe in Neuchatel.

Another option if you'd like some fun practice on your own - try duolingo.com.

Hey guys!!! Does Anyone know if the language evenings are still happening at Le Cerf? Last I saw they were on Tuesdays? I'm really interested in setting up a conversational French/English speaking group....

My French grammar is not bad, I just can't use it in conversation so if someone has free time to talk in French, I would be grateful!

Well I am definitely keen to form a meet up group to get some French and English practise in for anyone else who is keen!! I see that the Cerf is still hosting language evenings, http://www.cafeducerf.ch , so think I will just head to that and see what it is like!!! If you are interested Omid, you should check it out!!

I am waiting for a confirmation email from the Cerf with regards to their language evening tonight but if there is anyone keen then let's do it anyway!!! We can accommodate any level, beginner and advanced. Being in an environment that forces you to listen and engage in conversation should do wonders for your practice!!! What sort of times works? 8/9 pm?

Hello everyone. I am french and have lived in an english speaking country for a while. I would love to meet people interested in speaking both french and english, and help out improve their french. I will try to make it to the cerf cafe sometime this month and maybe meet some of you there! But if anyone is interested in meeting and learning french through conversations, please let me know. I am availiable in neuchatel or la chaux de fonds, on mornings only.

Hope to read you soon!

That would be me!

Best is to get to a nice outdoor restaurant and speak with locals there. You will learn a lot within no time. I for example improved my very meagre Italian during one week schoolclass vacations in the Centovalli and in Tenero on the Lago di Lugano. Mostly because I was almost the only one able to speak the local language, to some rather minor extent

We also had a class one-week vacation in Vaumarcus with many excursions and lots of chances to practice French for all those ready to do so

Looks like I am going to drive down to Neuch on a Thursday afternoon, to go to the English Choir in the evening. If we can find a suitable venue- we could organise a talk/chat in French group late afternoon. This will not be suitable for beginners though- only for those who can communicate in basic French already (I am a native French-speaker but UK qualified teacher with 30+ years experience).

Hello Odile, I have read a lot about you on the forum! I would love to be able to meet and see if we can come up with french sessions or group work...! Do you live far from neuchatel? If you're interested, you can send me a private message!!
