leaving CH and car inspection

Hello, I am leaving CH at the end of September.

Is this a good reason to not have a car inspection in the following months?

I had last car inspection on June 2020, so it might come soon.

I've had my car since 2015, it's 12 years old and I've only been invited for an MFK once in those 7 years. You're probably good.

You may postpone the vehicle inspection by a maximum of two months from the first date without giving any reason. The first date is usually a month or two away so you stand a good chance of being able to delay until after the end of September.

If you are selling the car you could get a better price with it tested.

I am not selling my car

I have different experience. 8 years in CH and I have done 3 cars inspections already. The last one was quite expensive. I had to spend about 2500CHF to prepare my car for inspection.

Most of the times they are late. Last inspection was 3 year after the previous one. But you never know. I wouldn't like to spend some thousands of CHF to prepares car for an inspection that worth's nothing.

But my question is very simple: is anyone aware of a way of informing Strassenwerkersamt that I am leaving so they can keep my car inspection on hold?

No, but read post N° 2...

Do you mean if no letter comes until end of July I am ok?

You’re over complicating things.

Wait until you get a invitation for inspection. If your last one was in June 2020 it’s unlikely you’ll get one soon as there’s a backlog due to Covid.

If you get an invitation with a date for the inspection before your leaving date postpone it to a later date. Leave with the car, register car in new place, hand back the plates, cancel inspection, job done.

I'm a noob here - how do you know if you need to do an inspection? Had two cars over the last 5 years (one for under a year, then re-exported without completing the import paperwork and one bought here and kept for 5 years).

Is it like the UK where I need to proactively do it?

Nope, you wait until they contact you and invite you for the inspection.

In fact, they give you a forewarning to give you a chance to sell, repair, destroy etc. the vehicle before the test.

This is no UK-style MOT test done by back-street garages. It's run by the canton and it's a toughy and cars must be presented with washed engine bays and empty ashtrays...

What happens if the car fails on something? Do you get a chance to retest?

Is there a fee associated? Is there a list somewhere of what they check?

i.e. for someone who's a bit technically minded like me, I would give the car a once over before the inspection... If it's simple stuff like brake pads/fluid, etc... then I could get the car ready...

I think you are right, chances to get a letter on the next 45 days are very few.

I just wanted to check what is the best way to take

Simple answer is it depends.

If it’s something minor they tell you to get it rectified and trust you to do it without requiring a re-test.

If it’s something more serious you need to get it fixed within a specified time frame and take it back to be re-tested. There is an additional fee for the re-test.

If I remember rightly the initial test costs 65chf (in Neuchâtel), not sure about the re-test fee as I’ve never had to do one.

The TCS site gives a bit of info on what the test involves and how to prepare for it. They even offer a preparation service but for a fee of course.

You can the language to German or Italian.

You do have to pay a lot when you give a garage a blank cheque.

If you wait until after the test you only have to fix whatever they find fault with.

Indeed, even my local mechanic recommands to do nothing other than cleaning before the test.

Same for ours.
