Apologies if this is covered elsewhere. I have searched and not found a similar thread.
We were uncertain as to what was best for our family and we have now decided to deregister us. It has taken a couple of months to make the decision which of course is sensible so we have paid premiums simply for a couple of months whilst I have been in the UK. I know we can backdate our deregistering with the Canton office so I wondered whether we could have the few hundred francs back for our health insurance for that time. It is not a huge deal but of course would be good if we could have asked for it.
Or are you for some reason scared to ask them?
The answer was given. From the date you deregister. And whether you can backdate that will be dependent on your city.
No deregistration = no cancellation of health insurance = no refund
Rather, from the first of the following month (i.e. September in your case).
I did that when my daughter left in January 2014, but I only de-registered her in February just in case she decided to return.
The commune back-dated her de-registration to the day she physically left, and the insurances were refunded for February (after I provided them with de-registration letters from the commune).

As a UK resident there’s no risk to a Swiss insurer as the OP is covered by the NHS. If she wasn’t a UK resident it would be different.
OP deregister from your gemeinde/commune and then send a copy of the document you get to the insurance company. They should then refund the money - make sure you provide them with bank account details if it isn’t going into your current Swiss account.
