Leaving CH: Refunded Health Insurance monthly premiums from departure date

I left Switzerland in August - it was unexpected and I am now in England with my children and my husband is continuing to work in Switzerland until he gets a job back here. We have now decided to terminate mine and my childrens' residencies in Switzerland. We will be able to backdate our residence termination to the date we flew out of the country. Can we expect to have our health insurance monthly premiums refunded from that date?

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere. I have searched and not found a similar thread.

Why would they refund your health insurance premiums when you didn't tell them you were leaving? How long have you been back in the UK, continuing to pay your Swiss health premiums?

No. You can only stop your health insurance from the date you de-register.

Thank you for the answer.

We were uncertain as to what was best for our family and we have now decided to deregister us. It has taken a couple of months to make the decision which of course is sensible so we have paid premiums simply for a couple of months whilst I have been in the UK. I know we can backdate our deregistering with the Canton office so I wondered whether we could have the few hundred francs back for our health insurance for that time. It is not a huge deal but of course would be good if we could have asked for it.

Isn't it far simpler to just call your health insurer up and ask them, rather than going via us? It will take you 5 minutes.

Or are you for some reason scared to ask them?

I struggle to manage with communication with my insurance company as it is mostly all done online and it is difficult to find an english speaking person and I thought this forum might give me the answer. Also they might not offer a refund upfront, likely not in fact, and I thought there might be some policy with this that I could push for. I assumed this forum is here to help. Why not just ignore the thread if you think it is a stupid question?

The answer was given. From the date you deregister. And whether you can backdate that will be dependent on your city.

No deregistration = no cancellation of health insurance = no refund

Almost.

Rather, from the first of the following month (i.e. September in your case).

I did that when my daughter left in January 2014, but I only de-registered her in February just in case she decided to return.

The commune back-dated her de-registration to the day she physically left, and the insurances were refunded for February (after I provided them with de-registration letters from the commune).

It wouldn't make much sense for insurer to back date termination date. They covered you during those months, carried the risk, even though the risk hadn't realized. But in insurance you pay for covered risks.

Yet they do.

BTDT.

As a UK resident there’s no risk to a Swiss insurer as the OP is covered by the NHS. If she wasn’t a UK resident it would be different.

OP deregister from your gemeinde/commune and then send a copy of the document you get to the insurance company. They should then refund the money - make sure you provide them with bank account details if it isn’t going into your current Swiss account.
