Leaving gift for a colleague

A friend and colleague is leaving work to go travelling with her husband for a year. Can anyone suggest an appropriate leaving present, preferably which would be of use on their travels? I've never travelled in that respect myself, so somewhat stumped. They are going Far East, Oz, NZ, South America, North America, if that helps.

A GPS? depends a bit if they are roughing it, or taking a more civilised approach.

I should have explained, this would be a personal gift, not from the department collection, and a GPS is a little bit extravagant.

As regards approach, I think they are planning to do a bit of both.

An engraved swiss army knife could be a good idea.

Its personalized, reminds them of Switzerland and also useful if they are in the jungle.

quinine tablets?

anti -malarial pills?

(carpet) snake bite kit?

If she is the writing type, perhaps a nice diary to record their travels.

I was thinking something along those lines actually. They are both Swiss btw, so will be coming back .

Thank you for your valued input

Unlikely, she said she probably won't even send any postcards etc.

That's a good idea. Perhaps a Moleskin one?

Another idea is one of those min-tripods so they can take self-timer pictures of themselves in all the locations they visit.

The problem with giving a present for travelling is that if they've planned the trip well, they'll know exactly what they want and probably would have bought it all already.

I've bought these for people going travelling. They weigh nothing, pack up to almost nothing and can support an SLR.

It's not the same - I've written travel diaries but detest writing and sending postcards.

on a more serious note..

Solar charger for Iphone, kindle , etc..

Water filter system, anti diarrhea pills, probiotics. Seriously they can't have too many of them...

I would also choose the solar charger.

depending on what they are doing, a package with some disposable underwater cameras, guide books or something like that may work. my parents gave my son those cameras for our snorkeling trip and they were great, especially when you don't want to bring a camera along on the beach. also, a bit lazy but one of those american express or other kinds of gift cards are useful too, just gives them a bit of unexpected cash to spend, which is always helpful when traveling.

Signed photo of yourself .

They're probably going to take a lot of pictures, perhaps an extra SD card or space on a server for them to upload pictures.

Tickets for a nice museum or event if you know one of the cities they're traveling to.

Give them a roll of Züri Sack so they can throw all the rubbish gifts they get.

We once gave someone an inflatable globe and some pins to stick where they had visited. Apparently it didn't survive well.

How about a book of best 50 places to visit in the world so they can tick off what they have or haven't?

A currency converter or a translator? (I know, phones make them obsolete nowadays, but will they actually have their phones with them what with the costs of international browsing?)

Morning All,

I don’t know whether to resurrect this thread or start a new one.

(Mods feel free to move it if you wish )

I too have a colleague who will leave in a couple days (Although not to travel, they will start their new job 100km down the road ).

We (about 4/5 of us) are looking to get her a leaving gift.

Our little team would be those who worked with her closest- Nothing extravagant but a little token gift.

Im completly drawing a blank at what would be appropriate!

Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

a Kindle.

Flowers usually go down well, Or plant in a very nice pot (not cactus). If you get plant and pot, ensure with the pot it is easy to see when plant needs watering, ie plant is not a tight fit in the pot.

Maybe also a strictly fun useless present for a few chuffs

You say nothing about the interests or age range of the female colleague

Thanks for your replies.....

Was just googling ideas and came across this one:

smartbox.ch

I think its a nice idea

Here you can buy a "package" so maybe a weekend away, dinner, Spa days etc...

So if i buy the dinner one then she can choose from XXX amount of restaurants or if I choose a hotel package then XXX amount of hotels etc..
