Leaving Switzerland during [regular naturalization] process

Hello,

I started the regular nationalisation process earlier this year and live in Zurich with a C permit. Currently, I am unemployed and as it looks I believe it will be faster for me to find a job corresponding to my profile in Germany or the UK rather than Switzerland, and the recruitment process is advanced for one position in Germany. I will therefore likely need to decide soon whether I take this job and leave Switzerland, or stay in Switzerland until I find a job here. My idea was to take this job in Germany until I find a position in Switzerland and then come back here. I think this would be the best option because the RAV would not need to pay unemployment allowance during this period abroad.

My question is: in case I find a job outside of Switzerland first, would the swiss authorities make an exception and not stop the naturalisation process, considering my situation ?

Thanks for your help,

Mary

No, why should they? There’s no guarantee you’d find a job here soon or even at all. A requirement of getting naturalisation is that you’re resident here which you won’t be if you’re living/working in the UK or Germany.

I do not know how far into Germany your new job will be. But if you are willing to keep up your main residency and center of life here and travel back every weekend you may still be eligible for naturilization.

Nope. If you leave Switzerland, then bye bye Naturalisation and bye bye C-permit.

You could however commute as already mentioned.

facilitated or the long process?

Unless she's married to a Swiss.

Tom

Regular she said in her opening post.

I must apologise for stopping reading after 4 words

Regular was the fourth word. Or were you includinging Hello in the word count?

hello is a word. It must be counted.

Okay, I’ll forgive you then. But maybe consider upping your word count to 5 or even 6 before giving up in future.

Thanks for your advice,

I have done some reading in the meantime and apparently there is a possibility to keep the C-permit valid during 4 years. At least I would not need to go through the whole process again when coming back to Switzerland. Here's the link to the law and extract of the Art.:

https://www.admin.ch/opc/en/classified-compilation/20020232/index.html

Art. 61 Expiry of permits

2 (...) On request, a permanent residence permit may remain valid for a further four years .

Do you know whether there are any specific conditions to fulfill in order to submit this request ?

Thanks

Yes, of course there are and there’s only 3 that are acceptable. Your Swiss employer sends you on assignment to work abroad, military service or further education. Otherwise, the default answer if you ask is “no” and you’d have to make a REALLY good case to get them to say yes. You meet none of the conditions so don’t even bother asking because leaving to find a job while your citizenship application is going through won’t cut it.

This is the link to an application form to maintain a C permit while abroad for Canton Aargau:

You should search for a similar application form for your Wohnkanton.

Edit:

I agree with Medea Fleecestealer's view. If I were you, I would discuss this matter with an immigration attorney before applying. Also, Canton Zurich regular naturalizations seem to take about one year. Would it be worthwhile for you to just be a little more patient?

Thanks,

That could definitely be an option for me, as I would keep my apartment in ZH and spend as much time as possible here. If I do this, i.e. commute every week, do you know what administrative work I will have to do ? Do I need to inform the Gemeinde, change my tax residency ?
