Leaving Switzerland in short notice

Due to a family emergency, I am actually leaving Switzerland in around 3 weeks.

How should I sell my furniture in the coming days, if I don't manage to sell all of them what is the way to dispose or donate the furniture?

I also need to hire a professional cleaning service, so I was wondering if trash disposal was part of their services.

1) You can sell stuff here, on tutti, Ricardo or FB

2) Find out where your recycling service is and ask them about prices for throwing anything away that can't be sold or donated.

If you have stuff you can‘t get rid of in a hurry there are house/flat clearance services „“Räumung“, sometimes connected to the Brockis. E.g. https://irmaundfred.ch/raeumung/ (no personal experience, just noticed it passing). But I‘ve seen loads of vans around Basel offering it. I think a couple of the „man with a van“ that advertise on the expat Facebook pages offer it too.

Most of (all?) the cleaning companies will do a handover clean for you. Not sure if one company will do everything but maybe some are connected up.

If the furniture is reasonable new, donate it to the local brokenstube, they will usually pack and move for free.

Don't expect a "trash disposal" service as part of the standard offer.

Make sure that you tell them what exactly you expect in terms of "trash disposal" and they will confirm if they will charge extra for it or if they can't provide that service at all.

They will most likely be able to propose a solution for your at an extra cost.

i would get a brocki to clean out furniture, then get a handover clean-up from a large cleaning company.

Large amounts of trash are not standard so i would ask first. Asking them to take care of large trash like furniture might be too much for some companies.

The municipality in big cities sometimes offers a curbside trash pick-up, it's expensive but the alternative is renting a van and carrying everything to an entsorgungshof if you don't have one. And for some trash you have to pay to deposit.

Selling is too time intensive in 3 weeks and people won't pay much. I assume you don't have antiques or similar.

Remember to kill all the contracts.

We have all assumed you are leaving permanently . If it is just for an extended time , a storage service may also be a good option for the stuff that is too valuable to trash, give away or sell on the cheap , and that you may wie to have when you come back .

I was going to say consider having stuff shipped home but with shipping costs being crazily high right now that is maybe not a good idea except for very valuable or sentimental stuff

Concerning cleaners , there are specifically cleaning companies who guarantee that the cleaning will be accepted . They know all the types of things landlords typically jump on and take extra care with those things . Somebody from the cleaning company will also be there with you at the handover and if the landlord complains about anything they will fix it there and then . This may be more costly than a normal cleaning job but is maybe worth it as you will have enough other stuff to worry about

If you're completely giving up your apartment, you might consider asking your landlord or the building's caretakeror agent for a recommendation. Often, landlords maintain an working relationship with one or two cleaning companies, on whom they call when a tenant, for whatever reasons (e.g. emergency departure, illness, death) is unable to follow the proper process before a handover.

I'm sorry you're facing a family emergency. Against that, it might be worth weighing up the options in terms of your mental health and reserves, and paying someone the landlord trusts. That might cost a bit more, or not, but could set you free in one step. If the landlord agrees to this, make sure you get their written consent.

In any event, also make sure the quote by the cleaning-and-clearing company is in writing, too.

Before you leave, try to designate someone in Switzerland to receive your mail after you've gone, so you can be sure to tidy up any loose ends which might not occur to you now.

I would suggest that you try and sell it (make it a good deal for the buyer because you need to get rid of it quickly). If you cant sell it, give it away free.

Broki will charge YOU for taking it away free. So you are better off giving it away free to others. This is what happened to me when I had to move at very short notice.
