Is there a retirement age for doctors in Switzerland? Some time ago I came across a doctor who was 79 and still practicing. In fact, he still performs surgeries. I'm not questioning this doctor's physical/mental health, nor I'm questioning his caliber. But since medicine is a highly regulated profession, was wondering if there is an upper age limit until when one can practice.
Providing you are qualified and still registered to practice you can continue.
No limit.
No, but as they get older, they have more trouble sourcing material their well tried a tested cures:
Leeches for blood letting, nitrous oxide and naval rum for anesthetics etc.
There is a certain amount of truth in that.
Older people can get set in their ways and may not be as open to new ideas, technology and treatments.
Given that in there is a shortage of GPs in some areas, I'll take an older doctor over no doctor any day.
It's a much less demanding job than being president of the US, so why not?
My urologist retired at 81. After that I vowed that I'll always seek practices where the doctor is younger than me.
All depends what the problem is really.
An older dermatologist has far more experience and this is a field of experience whereas an orthopedist may not want to fit Birmingham Hip Replacements as the operation is far more technical than a simple hip op.
A decision that gets easier with time
