Could anybody please tell me whether I need a legalisation/apostille for my new birth certificate issued by the Zurich Canton for a consular purpose in Italy?

All apostillas are done at the cantonal office.
US and Canada do not require apostillas for Swiss International birth certificates, but Italy may (they require it for a lot of things, including inheritance certificates, but NOT Familienscheins).
Best is to ask the Italian Embassy in Bern if they need it or not.
