Life in Wallisellen...info needed!

Hi guys,

I've found an apartment in Wallisellen, decent rent, perfect for what I need but I don't really know much about the area.

The 10 minute commute into Zurich and slightly lower taxes than Zurich make Wallisellen seem quite appealing .

Anyone living there care to share some info?

How safe it is at night? Any areas to avoid?

Plus any general hints or tips...good pubs/bars/cafes etc.

Thanks in advance,

Rachael

Did you go and check out the area at all before you found the appt?

It's a rather bland suburb sandwiched in between the airport/motorways & shopping mall strips. IMHO

If you like going out, then you'll probably find yourself spending those tax savings on cabs back from Zurich.

Not my cup of tea I'm afraid.

I live there ! And Leafy Im not inviting you out for a barbie anytime soon

Seriously though.

We were living in Zurich (Oerlikon) and wanted a house, near Zurich but with a garden and Wallisellen was where we ended up. Its definitely a subarb - though has improved recently - and the village is a bit drab. But it has excellent commuting to Zurich with frequent train and tram services so Im always in the city and rarely pay for taxis back.

There are lovely walks up towards the tennis courts/pool through the forrest bringing you to opfikon.

Its near the Glatt for convenience. There is also a new Coop in hte station, the whole station area has been totally renovated.

its near the motorway for access to driving to Zurich up in the Uster/St. Gallen direction.

Its near the airport.

There are lots of expats about which is nice.

We have a young family and the schools seems to be good (my oldest is only 2 so its early days for us) and there are lots of young families around.

The only thing I dont like are the overhead planes that we sometimes hear, but if you want to live near a city you are going to hear something be it trains, traffic or planes. Of htose 3 where we are we only hear the odd plane.

In short though initially I was homesick for Oerlikon (bizarre) we do like it. If you have specific questions please ask.

Irish Marmot

Fair enough

Wallisellen 8304?

We lived there from 2001-2005.

No problems.

Glattzentrum, easy transport to the Airport and Zurich.

It's perfectly fine.

And the open-air bar by the Neugutstr./Alte Winterthurstrasse is nice in summer.

Great outdoor Badi just up the hill from there for the Summer months.

I would add, Wallisellen has almost become too popular - a la Bassersdorf and this is reflected particularly in the Road traffic.

I live in Oerlikon and quite often head out there to Glattzentrum.

You're only one stop from Dubendorf as well which also has bars etc. The only one I know of in Wallisellen is The Pot Still - great if you like whisky and sometimes they have live bands.

I only know the Wallisellen shopping area (glattzentrum and Jumbo for example...) Mind maybe the airplanes path (landing and take-off)

Let me put it this way: One of the best Swiss-German texting bands made a song on crap places in Switzerland. Title of the song: Wallisellen...

(He sings: "What on earth am I supposed to do in Wallisellen"...)

I used to work in the area and loved their swimming-pool. The rents are decent based on the low image of the town... and the location is fairly practical. So it is not some run-down ghetto, but clearly not posh...

What? Im as posh as they come....I make Hyacinth Bouquet look common.

Seriously though - I dont think an area being posh is a measure of it being a good place to live in. I know plenty of posh areas that are as boring as hell.

What Id say to the OP is - if you are young free and single and you have a choice of living in Zurich city or Wallisellen Id chose Zurich City. If you are a young family I would chose Wallisellen.

If you are young free and single and you cant find somewhere in Zurich to live then Wallisellen as a second option isnt bad either and you arent far from the center of "action" ie Zurich.

Ok, ok. In that sense is Wallisellen very posh.

(I should have said "in demand" instead...)

I'd only anticipated finding somewhere in Zurich itself so no... I'm living in England atm but as my bf is in DE he can go and check it out for me

Thanks for all of the info guys

Hi Rachel

Just seen your post whilst looking for something else!

I moved to Wallisellen last Nov and my boyfriend has recently joined me.

We love it here, the apartment is huge, ground floor for our 2 cats, the apartment has a conservatory which has a secure shutter across the door to get inside so we can leave the external door open so the cats have shelter if it's too warm/wet.

Wallisellen is rural, on the edge of the country side and everyone is friendly. Behind where we live there are fields for walking, tennis courts, forests for cycling and a riding school. We also have a Sports Centre, which has an rink for ice hockey, we have a gym in the Zentrum, the swimming pool has both in and outdoor pools - so much for such a small place!

Wallisellen now has the Tram 12, which is ideal to get to Glatt for shopping, Glatt Park where I work or the Flughafen which takes just a minute to each tram stop. For Oerlikon the train takes 7 mins and Zurich central about 15 mins. There is a bus service or a short drive to get to IKEA, large Migros supermarket, Qualipet and there are outlets near for Globus etc.

Wallisellen is perfect and more like village life, with plent of restaurants (and an Italian that will do home delivery) and if you want the busy, concrete life of Zurich central it's just a short train ride.

I assume you have found somewhere to live, where did you chose?

Regards, Diana

Hi, You have Dockturhaus which has a nice bar . Belair Restaurant is really good.

I live in Wallisellen,

it is safe and clean and i see a lot of familly

i like the field ext to sportzentru where i can walk the Lab !

Now if you expect a night life, well yes there is the Still pot

i haven t been there and a couple of Restaurants, but this is it.

but if you wish as a said a safe less expensive then Zurich and a lot of new appartments ,this is the place.

I just moved to Switzerland and I am staying in Wallisellen. I needed some info about the activities for kids here....like tennis, swimming, dancing, music, drawing or any other. It would be helpful if someone can post a reply. Thanx.

I am also planning to move from Bangalore and Walliselen is one of my shorlisted suburbs because of the presence of Intl School. I have 2 very noisy and over-active kids so wanted to know if Walliselen would be a good option. Let me know your experience in the past one year

I live in Wallisellen. Not the most exciting place but enough shopping possibilities, easy access to the motorway and airport, only a 10 min train ride to down town Zurich. It has a couple of nice restaurants and if you want to do bigger shopping sprees the Glatt Zentrum. It also has the international school Zurich Nord. I quite like it here as it is quiet but still gives me decent access to train connections/Zurich.

Also the tax advantage is a plus for me (but for that you might want to check even more tax beneficial cities).

The Glatt shopping center has a really good supervisied play area for childern. Ideal for some quite shopping time
