Life in Zug?

My husband and I are considering moving to Zug, and I wondered if anyone could please give me their general thoughts on what it is like to live there as an ex-pat. Is there much of an expat community / social life? Which neighborhoods are considered attractive places to live? How much would we need to spend to purchase a house or apartment with at least 5.5 rooms and 175 m2 in the Zug area? As background, my husband and I are in our mid-30s and have a one-year old son, and plans for another child. Thus, we are no longer going out to the bars every night, though we are quite active and social and interested in meeting other people. We are currently living in the US, but lived in Basel previously for 2 years, so are familiar with life in Switzerland generally. Thank you in advance for your feedback, which will be very helpful to us in making a decision.

Best, Linnea

Hi Linnea, You will love it here in Zug especially if you have kids. Beautiful lake & stunning views. Seemingly quiet but yet it's interesting enough to make you wanna stay . There is also a Gymboree Play & Music School (at the Zug Bahnhof) to keep your child and you entertained. Anyways have a read of this thread.

Good Luck!

what!?!?!? love it? entertained? hahahaha....

I agree with Ayumi. I cant understand how anyone can like it here. I have been here since begin June & choose now to schedule business travel around weekends so I can stay somewhere where there is a bit of life & soul for the weekends.

It's way to clinical, soulless and there are no singles as far as I have ever found... at least not my age-group.

I guess being attached with family would make it slightly less lifeless though.

You should meet terry hall. He's a dude and will lift you from your Zug apathy.

dave

Thanks - how do i do that?

hey, I'm not a dude, but you can call me up for a drink or so. having been here since last july have quite a few english-speaking friends, that I can introduce you to... will pm you my number

I really like Zug !?

True it may not have the same level of variety as Zurich has to offer (and true I do spend a lot of social time in Zurich due to friends I've met there) - but come on, Zug isn't all that bad!

(Although I do now exercise caution about venturing into the Topas Club without the seemingly ubiquitous bling, oversized baseball cap and low slung baggy jeans)

Seriously, Zug is a great place - I would say that for the OP's situaton it's pretty much ideal. As with anywhere, it is what you make it - if you find it lifeless / soulless, maybe you just need to dig a little deeper and give it more of a chance..?

Zug is a great place to live! You can always give me a ring once you are here. I have a son that is 16 months old.

Like someone else posted Gymboree is where a lot of expat moms meet up, also Starbucks at the train station. There is also International Mums and Kids Club.

Good luck with buying a house/ apartment. Most will set you back a million francs +depending on the location and age of the building.
