Limmat water quality

Does anyone know if there is a website that tracks the water quality of the Limmat? I seem to remember that there is a place where you can check the daily temperature, but wondering if there is any measurement of bacteria/chemicals, etc.

Thanks,

Don't know about bacteria, but where I am there is a hell of a lot of silt.the water is clean, but very "grey"..so much so I have to "de-kalk" my about 1-2 a fortnight.

We have been taking our dog to swim near the Langstrasse bridge for the last 4 yrs. This year, there is construction going on nearby, so maybe stuff is getting into the water. Our dog is having some skin problems (for the first time), so trying to make a connection.

Our vet mentioned that the Limmat is not so clean, but as lots of people swim in it (including me), I would think the city of Zurich would monitor it periodically.

Hmmm.....if you think about all the swimming in Rivers you did as a kid with little though about what your local farmer was dumping into the river a mile upstream. Then think this is Switzerland and generally excellent controls on polluting i'd say just jump right in and go for a swim..........I wouldn't intentionally drink it though

I've not seen the Limmat but given the generally hilly / mountainous nature of Switzerland, I'd have thought that things that happened over night may not be an issue in the same area the next day...

Or is the Limmat particularly sluggish?

The Limmat is a relatively fast flowing river coming out of lake Zurich, crossing the city and flow through Aargau till Turgi. There are I believe three outdoor "Badi" in Zurich alone where people swim in the river in summer. Thousands of them. Every day.

It would take a lot of people to pollute the river in a way that a dog would get skin problems from it. I seriously doubt that it is the water quality, since the water comes straight out of the lake and is naturally monitored... (otherwise the swimming pools would not be opened...).

While I tend to agree, the area where we have been swimming is just down river from a construction site where there is a lot of digging a few meters from the river. Also, there is a LOT of pollen floating in the water and in the area where we swim (in front of the power station), it is quite sluggish.

In any case, if there was some testing of the water in different spots with historical records, I would love to see them.

Thanks for the feedback thus far.

Most of the documents monitoring quality of water you will find here:

Hurray! Some facts.

Oh dear. I should have checked.

This should answer any doubts you have....your dog should be fine too...

There has been a lot of ashes from dead people flowing down recently.

Nice report, but mainly measures chemical contaminants. Was hoping for a bacterial count, as my dog's problem is a bacterial infection of the skin.

And I am generally curious about the water.

Yesterday the Limmat stunk like hell and was a dirty brown colour. Probably from the Sihl river (polluted) which flows into it.
