Hi,
We are scouting around for a long-term relocation and we have found a few apartments in Glattpark that are within our budget. I saw a few threads on this when I used the search function but they are all a bit out of date. We are a family with 2 kids that are about to start secondary school. I have a few questions.
1) Is it family friendly?
2) Are there many services around e.g. shops, post office, bank or will any be around in the future?
3) Is the noise from the aircraft tolerable or is it very loud?
4) What secondary schools other than KZN are there in that area?
5) What is the bus service like?
6) What are the advantages/disadvantages of living there?
Any other comments on the area are welcome as well.
Thanks in advance
I live in Glattbrugg, another borough of Opfikon-Glattbrugg-Oberhausen-Glattpark and know the Glattpark borough quite well
1) yes, it is family friendly, with many green spaces plus the artificial lake and the park around it
2) services ? there is a post-office right accross Thurgauerstrasse. Banks already are UBS and ZKB on Schaffhauserstrasse in Glattbrugg, but I heard that one or two banks will open in Glattpark
2 - b ) shops ? at present there is a SPAR right in the middle of Glattpark and an Aldi on the "border" to Oerlikon. A Migros and a COOP are under construction.
3) there is not much aircraft noise really as the planes in Glattpark are already fairly high
4) Opfikon-Glattbrugg-Glattpark has quite many schools, so that should not be a problem
5) there is bus 781 going right through the middle of Glattpark getting to Glattbrugg on one end and coming from Oerlikon at the other. On Thurgauerstrasse you have two tram-lines connecting the airport with Oerlikon, Uni/ETH, HB (line 10) and the airport with Glattzentrum, Dübendorf and Zch-Stettbach (line 12), and on the border to Oerlikon you have tram 11 which goes to Oerlikon, Bucheggplatz, Schaffhauserplatz, HB, Bahnhofstrasse, Bürkliplatz, Bellevue, Stadelhofen
6) DISadvantage is that it is a new town which means a thoroughly modern place but without traditions and up to now not many restaurants. Advantages are the sunny location, its being in easy reach of airport and downtown. Imagine that the trams need 2 minutes to the rail-station of Glattbrugg, some 10 minutes to the airport, less than 10 minutes to Oerlikon.
I've been in that vicinity a lot recently and noticed that there was a nice looking expanse of water (a pool perhaps?) visible from the "Fernsehestudio" tram stop. Or, did my tired eyes deceive me?
@Wolli: Over to you!
That is an artificial lake - you can swim in it.
Yup. Here's a picture of Wollishofener enjoying a pleasant dip:
It is a small artificial lake. There are nice benches along the lake and you in summer can go swimming. I prefer Zürichsee, Katzensee, Greifensee, but this one is so close to my place that it is really positive
Thanks!
It did look quite interesting and there were also some kids skateboarding in an area very close to the tram stop but there was no time to check it all out at that time. Will defo do so in due course, however.
Thanks all for the quick replies I have 1 more question. Does the fact that it is outside the city borders make a difference in terms of which schools my children can attend etc? I know that the tax is lower outside the city borders from looking at comparis.
Thanks again.
Yes, you go to school in the same "Gemeinde", unless you have Gymnasium level kids.
If you want your children to go to schools in the Stadt Zürich you have to talk with the authorities. A "Gesuch" may be required. As children living in the City of Opfikon-Glattbrugg-Glattpark generally are expected also to go to school there.
Ok, thanks This clears things up a bit. I suppose that there aren;t many other differences than living in Stadt Zurich.
No, Glattbrugg (Opfikon-Glattbrugg-Glattpark) is very much an "outer suburb" of Zürich, but very well connected by public-transport to Zürich Downtown. For comparison, the "Kreis-2" of Zürich has about as many inhabitants as OGG .
One last question: Where can I find info about the secondary schools (in particular gymnasiums) available in the Bulach region? Thanks again for the swift responses
The reason why I asked so many questions is that the closest gymnasium to Glattpark that I know of is Kantonsschule Zurich Nord. Would my children be able to go to school there if we lived in Glattpark? The only other alternative I can think of is Kantonsschule Zurich Unterland which is a 30 minute commute away which I think that my kids would rather avoid.
Or KS Stadelhofen, 15 - 20 minutes on the train.
Secondary school is not automatically gymnasium, btw, just in case you got that impression.
No, no I knew about the others Its just that I have high expectations But would they be allowed to attend the one in Stadelhofen because of not residing within the Zurich city borders?
Unlike the Secondary Schools, the "Mittelschules" (incl Gymnasium) are not municipal but Cantonal
