Living in Nyon Area

Hi,

I'm settling in Switzerland, working in Meyrin (Geneva) and investigating appartment to rent in the area of Nyon and Gland (Geneva is definately expensive!!).

How is living there ?

Is it really traffic to go to Meyrin (Geneva) in the morning - what estimated time to get there departing around 8h30 in the morning from Nyon area?

Any other city to investigate in the area where it's nice to live?

Thanks

R

You find some interesting opinions in this thread: Anyone regret living in Nyon? .

I like Nyon. The lake nearby, the Jura for hikes.

But it depends on your lifestyle. If you want intense nightlife, nightclubs, etc... forget about it.

Nyon-Meyrin on the autoroute at 8.30 in the morning is roughly 45min.

Nyon is calm and quiet, close enough to Geneva for the culture and education though, so it is nice. The area around is great to venture out to, as well.

Good luck with the apartment, it is a horrible headache, similar to Geneva. And pricey as well.

If I had to commute to Geneva I would take a train and then public transport, to avoid the morning jams (15mins train Nyon - Geneva).

Thanks MusicChick.

Yes, I noticed renting an appartment there is also tricky ! Any other area you think about, cool and not to far from Geneva to commute by car ?

Thks!

Yes, but going from Cornavin to Meyrin is a pain.

Isn't there a bus to Meyrin? I can imagine though they also get stuck in trafic and are quite slow.

Pragnings (although it is tiny, still quite quaint) and Coppet seem to be popular, Versoix too.

My buddy bikes it most days by the Lake road. Only 30km each way, so 45-50 mins for him and you get really fit .

Nyon and the wider area are nice but as Kristofolo says, there's no nightlife (there's not much in Geneva either). You'll like Nyon if you like the lake, the vineyards, the nearby Jura mountains for hiking, biking and some skiing. If these aren't your things then think twice.

One thing with the motorway journey is the random element, it can take 30 minutes one day, it can be 50 the next. By 8.30 the traffic starts to calm down but it only takes an accident or another problem for the road to jam up.
