Living in Regensdorf

We are moving to Zurich later this year and I'd really appreciate any views/opinions on living in Regensdorf.

To provide some context, we are English (and don't currently speak German), we will shortly have 4 children - 7, 4, 2 and new born.

We are moving to Zurich on a permanent basis and are keen to integrate into local society so have decided to send our children to a local school. I will be working in Zurich.

My specific questions are:

1. Views on the local primary schools in Regensdorf. Any issues with native English speakers attending? Are the schools able to respond to the needs of a bright child? Have people experienced any problems/issues?

2. Any issues with plane noise?

3. Do many expats live in the area?

4. Is it an easy commute, do many people that work in the city choose to live in Regensdorf or surrounding area?

New to the forum, so would really appreciate any input

Many thanks

Sam

Hello and welcome to the forum. I don't know any details about the local primary school with regards to bright and/or English speaking children, but last year there was this big commotion when teachers brought an action against the principal and vice versa and everybody was cross with the school board, a lot of teachers and the pricipl left/were fired because it seemed like matters were really all ****ed up and the situation unbearable. Hopefully that has been settled by now.

It's an easy commute to Zurich, however when I lived in Regensdorf, I also worked there, as I am not willing to commute. If I worked in Zurich, I would choose to live in Zurich, Regensdorf is pretty boring, in fact I used to go to Zurich every day after work!

Never had a problem with airplane noise, but things may have changed in the past 22 years.

Thanks MacGregor's Daughter

Yes, I saw reference to that incident. I think it only related to one school in the town.

The primary school closest to where we are looking received the highest marks on a recent inspection but I was interested to understand how this translates into practical experiences for people

Where I live is so boring . . . I go to Regensdorf at night!

As i don't have children, i cannot really say much about school quality. We live in a very quiet neighborhood close to the church ("zentrum") and we enjoy living there. Within 5min, you are out in the woods and there is a lake 10min by bike. Shopping is nearby and commuting to zurich is ok (train every 30min, depending on where you work, bus might be better, every 10min), i ride to work on my bike. Plane noise is very low, but depends on exactly where you live in Regensdorf.

Our neighbors have children - both swiss and foreign - and they also enjoy living there. but as i said, i cannot judge.

Hope this helps you!

Thanks I_B

I'm also a cyclist so that's good to hear! If we end up moving there I'll have to get some advice on best cycle routes

HI! I know my response is kinda late, but I live in Regensdorf and have children aged 9 and 6. We have been here exactly a year and my kids have done just fine in the schools. In fact, our experience has been quite positive. Let me know if you are here or need more info. Good luck!
