Living in Switzerland, working in Germany (tax and permit)

Hello everybody!

I have searched through many threads but haven’t found a situation that is close to mine, which is why I am positing here now

I am working and living in Northern Germany at the moment, but I want to move to Basel-Land, Switzerland to live with my partner (we are not married) next summer.

My questions:

Is this even possible if I’m not working in Switzerland when I move there? I have lived in Basel-Stadt before from 2017-2020 on a B-Permit, but obviously gave that up when I moved to Germany. I’m guessing this has no effect on me moving back, but I would love to know on what grounds can I move back to Switzerland if my job is in Germany and I’m not married. I also hold an EU-Passport.

If it were possible, what way would my salary be taxed? I’m aware that financially it doesn’t make so much sense to live in Switzerland with a German income, but that is something I’m willing to do for a while before my freelance career takes off, in which case, living in Switzerland with my partner will make a lot of sense tax-wise. But from August 2022 - August 2023, my contract will be a monthly income from my German job in Northern Germany, and I would love to know whether you guys think it makes more sense to just keep a small apartment in Germany and just visit my partner for the time being, or whether it is actually possible to make my tax situation work and live in Switzerland and travel to my job when I am needed (I am not so sure I can qualify as a Grenzgänger seeing as my job is in Niedersachsen, but I do think my number of actual working days won’t exceed 180, which I’ve read in other places could help my situation possibly).

I would really appreciate help and input with anybody with information or experience on this matter.

Thanks!

S

If you want to live in CH and work for a DE company, you'll need to speak with your employer and either setup an ANOBAG or pay the services of an umbrella payroll company.

Based on which setup you choose, you'll then take care of the necessary social contributions.

I can recommend you Helvetica Payroll https://www.helvetic-payroll.ch/en/

However, depending on how much you earn, ANOBAG should be cheaper.
