I'm so tired of buying salad I can't eat in time. Be it the whole salad, or the bags that cost a lot for something that rots really fast, it just doesn't work for me. Yes I live alone, and I'm not the only one here.
So Migros have a solution for this: they sell in the same shelf that has the bags, 4 hearts of Romaine salad in a box, which is pretty damn good, same price as a bag, and they keep much longer. They're the best bits too, so you get the crunch if that's what you like. Treat yourself, it's over 3CHF, but it's worth it. I wouldn't bother eating lettuce otherwise.
My local Migros had tons of rotten mangoes on sale for CHF2:10 each. No way was I going to buy such dead looking mangoes. Anyway next day the sale was off and the same but even more rotten looking mangoes were going for CHF3:10 each lol
Coop on the other hand had good looking walnut sized mangoes going for CHF6:10 You got to have a good sense of humour to pull stuff like that off.
In the end I strolled over to my local ethnic store and got nice fresh mangoes for 1:80 each. Oh! and when they start getting old the ethnic shop gives them away for CHF1.
I find Coop offers more selection in terms of smaller package sizes. Just watch the dates on the packages, and you can often score a small bag at closing time for 50% off that will last two days. Migros salads don't seem to last as long, with the exception of the Alicesalat.
There was an article in K-tipp within the last year investigating how high the bacteria levels are in these bags of pre-washed salad. A surprisingly low number fell within the acceptable range, and it is difficult to single out one store (eg Migros or coop) as it is often one particular branch that has insufficient cooling,or delays in delivery to display.
Salad is not designed to last a week even when it lasts a long time. At best its only a 2-3 day type food so if its expensive you should buy less and plan to eat in a 2-3 day time interval
If you've got a balcony or even just space for window boxes, you're better off growing your own lettuce. You can cut off the leaves as and when you need them and the plant keeps the rest fresh.
This observation is valid in most countries. In fact pre washed salad meals are some of the unhealthiest meals in terms of bacteria levels. They are known to have a much higher level of difficult to eliminate bacteria which explains why they go off faster. They are also linked to a number of cases of food poisoning
since you're in lausanne- go either to the market or manor and buy the mixed mesclun salads (loose, not in bags) and weigh it.
it's fresher, lots of different types mixed in and you can take as much as you need. i buy at least 2x's a week and it's much better than the bagged stuff.
I'm not available/awake for the market. This stuff isn't bagged, it's the heart of the Romaine salad with the outer leaves removed. It can't be beat if you're not super particular about "variety of leaf". I don't care if one or even two of the four end up thrown. And no I don't have a terrasse/balcony, otherwise I would be growing, what do you think? I cook, and know my stuff foodwise.
On one of the TV cookery programmes, they froze a head of lettuce, sliced it thinly, and served it dusted with white icing sugar. Everyone liked it.
If your freezer is big enough, you could buy a head of lettuce and slice off the amount you need every day, I imagine the sugar dusting is optional, and put the remainder back in the freezer.
ever had some lettuce come into contact with the rear of fridge if it is iced up...transparent mush. Isn't TV cooking great
I don't buy bagged salad - I think it smells funny and has an odd "side-taste" - no doubt thanks to the bacteria, and special rinses (citric acid?) that are used.
