London to Zürich - travel by air or train?

is it possible going by train to zurich.

and is it cheaper??

cheers coby

It's slower and more expensive...But better.

It certainly is possible, if slow. See, for example, the Deutsche Bahn search results.

I use www.easyjet.com for cheap flights from London - but the earlier you book the better deal you get. Beware hidden costs like charging you for using a debit or credit card (how else are you supposed to pay!)

When I looked at trains (which don't limit you to a 20Kg allowance - useful when moving out to Zurich) they were much more expensive (and take 12 hours). Basically you take the Channel Tunnel to Paris and then a fast TVG to Zurich. Leave around 9am and arrive around 9pm.

Depending on where you live in relation to airports and train stations, it can be almost as quick to travel by train. The fastest train is under 8 hours journey time. London 14.02 today. Arrives Zurich 23.00 (Local times) Details: SBB

Also take into account the shorter check in time, no baggage retrieval/customs on arrival and the train takes you right to the Zurich HB. As mentioned before, you also benefit from extra luggage limits.

Price of trains is the major downside.

My last trip to London I traveled with SWISS. I payed 252 CHF for a round-trip including all taxes. It took 1h 40m in the air.

Don ́t forget to calculate the costs and the time for getting to and from the airports. Zurich airport is easy to access with trains. To/from Heathrow airport you can use the subway. From London City Airport you are better off taking a cab.

If the latest volcano eruption in Iceland causes the problems that the last one did, a train ticket would be worth a fortune
