So I've been here for a few years now. One thing that I really really want/need is some cheddar. Now I live in Chavornay (near Yverdon) and I haven't found any. I've found the processed cheese slices (meh to ok for cheeseburgers) but no cheddar cheddar.
Grumpy will mail you his wares, if you can't catch him on his occasional trips out west, but in the interim, larger stores of Coop and Migros do stock the poor but acceptable substitute of Cathedral City, which, after time without, can help to alleviate the cravings, in the absence of the real McCoy.
It depends a bit on what you want to do with it. I mean, if it's for daily chomping in the sort of quantities I get through, including melted for omelettes and cheese on toast etc, I think that the standard Cathedral City, available in Co-op and Migros (I think) is perfectly OK. Yes, it's factory made etc but it tastes fine to me.
GG does some excellent individual / farmhouse British cheeses (I've bought from his Zurich stall a few times) but they are obviously going to be more expensive to source. I buy them occasionally as a special treat.
I kind of agree, despite writing it above - however, as Pachyderm wrote, it is factory produced and can leave a film of fat when cooked, but is perfectly fine in a cheese and pickle buttie.
Avoid Cathedral City if you can; it does the job, but it's not much better than "meh." I do find that the big Migros here in Zug (and so presumably others) has a good cheddar for sale most days at their cheese counter though.
I'm sure you're too busy to make your own but, as I don't like Branston too much (although my grandchildren love it) I make mine with the tomatoes that don't ripen and turn red. It's absolutely delicious, so I'm told. At least I have a growing list of participants.
It's really easy to make, but please don't ask me for the recipe as there are loads of them online, most of which are very good, but some have far too much sugar.
You can buy over priced Cheddar at El Maiz in Zurich, they do it my post as well.
If you cross the border and go to the Casino at Saint Louis, they have French made Cheddar there for about 8 euros a kilo. It's totally fine for dumping on potatoes or nachos.
When I have a free moment, buying the cheese from Grumpy at the Viadukt, is on par with making a special trip to France just to have a selection of high quality cheeses, and a lot on par with the same prices of Swiss cheese. Which is supposed to be a compliment.
Problem with going to the Viadukt is that is makes me into a greedy little cheese hoarder, as it is harder to share once you have something that good.
Last time I invested all my savings into the Scottish ales they had, totally forgot about the cheese bits.
Seen Branston in Coop - and I'm sure Britshop will have it, too.
My wife was gifted a a thick Delia, everything cook book, years ago, and makes a very nice Old Dowager Chutney using dark plums (zwetchschen), which knocks the socks off Branston.
The Supermarché Casino in Divonne (across the border from Coppet) has Ivy's Vintage Cheddar in the cheese section as well as a lot of Anglo expat foods. Should be a shorter ride than going to Zurich!
