I have a UPC broadband in my 2 bedroom (3.5 room) 110 sqm flat. The standard router doesn't cover my flat so purchased a mesh network TP-Link Deco X20 set of 3. It's been working well but recently it doesn't reach into one of my bedrooms.
Can't find a pattern why the mesh doesn't work nor understand why the signal doesn't reach - the flat isn't big!! Perhaps due to the concrete walls no idea.
Went through hours of troubleshooting with TP-Link tech support and still not able to get this to work even with firmware updates, etc. I even purchased another set just to ensure hardware is not faulty, still same result.
Now I'm looking for alternatives - perhaps just get a super powerful router instead of a mesh network?
Very possibly if it's a high load wall it may have a lot of steel reinforcements or if the the wall is curved, that can be a big problem.
Use a phone wifi signal strength app to see where and if the signal drops off when you move around the flat.
Other people have recommended powerline solutions for difficult rooms or, if you can run a cable, put in an AP (Unifi for example) in the offending room.
UPC routers are notoriously poor, ask any shop assistant at an electronic goods store in Switzerland and they'll tell you all about it. Best off just investing in a repeater or two to extend the wifi range.
We use a mesh system TP-Link Deco M9 for a two story house with concrete walls and two floors. The house is roughly 50-65 meters in length. We needed three units, and they give some coverage in the garden as well.
Only 'recently'... so it did previously work in your bedroom with the TP-LINK X20 and now doesn't? Have you tried relocating the any of the routers to see if you can improve reception?
If you send a worker off to give a message to a far flung corner of a building, he's tied up doing that errand and cannot be used for anything else. It it's a long way away, he may lose focus slow down on the way and perhaps need to go back to remind himself of the bits he has forgotten.
If he tells someone else half way to carry on and give the message and he'll wait there to get the reply, you've just tied up two workers.
You don't have any spare so you can't send any more messages.
That's repeaters.
If instead, you telephone the message over to the far flung corner of the building, it gets there quicker and you still have your two workers available to deliver messages locally.
That's APs.
There's a bit more to than that but that's why repeaters are not a good solution.
I think so. I haven't measured it. I'm better in feet and yards, so I guesstimate it around 175 to 200 ft long. You are more than welcome to come by and measure it if you would like. Not sure how relevant this is to you. I am trying to give the OP an idea of the distance our mesh system is working over.
Maybe one of your neighbors got a powerful mesh system as well running on the same (default?) channel. As a first step, I would try to find another channel (pe. my Linksys Velop has an automatic channel-finder feature that picks you the best). If that doesn't help, just relocate the components of the system...
Of course. This is the first step I did. Def won’t get repeaters but was looking for other suggestions. Powerline is an option but not keen on speed downgrade
Ideally, you wire up all the rooms with ethernet, use a PoE switch to connect to the router and have Ubiquity APs with PoE in each room, the power-output tuned down so that the signal really only covers this specific room.
Since you have 2 sets, use the other 3 to reinforce the signal to that room. Try placing 2 so that they can face each other through the door of the bedroom instead of the wall maybe. For me the mesh works great, opposite of powerline which is poor especially in old houses with weird wiring, but it does take some positioning.
Simply get 2 good access points which will last you quite alot of years (Zyxel NWA210AX or ubuqitui U6-LR or U6 Pro), get a central switch with poe and you are good to know, if the switch it's not 100% required for you just get 2 poe injectors and that's it.
