I admire your courage moving to a region you don't speak the language (or do you and you want to improve it?).
Seems you're a bit on the cheap side, however. Asking for the local language shipping in your remote one will not easily work out fine.
Go get a course pay for it, that would be my personal advice.

When I moved to Zurich, I didn't speak German (though I had taken one course at university).
When I moved to Ticino, I didn't speak Italian (and have never studied it).
Now I speak both.
Only language I have studied here is Rumantsch (French I already knew well).

And in fact - you are the proof - it can work out fine.
I think it to be quite risky, as not knowing the local language - also if a person might not need it at work (wonder what kind of work that could be) or in dialy life - probably will not enhance personal growing and ability in handling with routine.
If a person succeeds in going ahead it's despite the lack in local languages, not because of.
P.S. And I don't want to ask you again for how many years you have been here. ;P
You don't say whether you work or study here. It shouldn't be too difficult to find someone who wants to improve their English and is willing to swap tales....put an ad at the local Univetsity. For courses try www.scuolaili.ch or even the council in Lugano. They do organise cheap courses for foreign residents from time to time.

I am fine to pay for a class. Just thought I would leave the option open for a language exchange which might help me to meet other people as well. I've moved here to be with my boyfriend, so I haven't had to learn Italian in the work place yet as I am still jobless.

I went to Migros but didnt find it that good , the books that help you study were in German French or Italian ( yeh in Italian to help you learn Italian I know Duh !)
A lot of people say the place behind the train station is very good, I dont know the name sorry
Also there is a language school opposite Parco Ciani on the main street before the traffic lights.

What someone who wants to learn a language could maybe do to find a private teacher is to pass by a Migros or Coop black board in the entrances. Normally you find some ads there and some of them aren't bad. Costs probably more than a group course but is individual and probably more flexible.
Also look here for some inexpensive courses in Lugano. I haven't taken any of these myself, but a friend of mine took a course offered by Il Centro on Via Brentani.

I just did the 8 week Italian course at Migros and found it pretty good and reasonably priced. If you speak one of the languages at least you can get by pretty well, but with just English you would struggle in Ticino at least.
I also downloaded the Rosetta Stone Italian course from a well known free downloading site which I will also give a bash in the coming weeks.

I've attended 3 different Italian courses in Lugano and my assessment is like this:
Scuola Club MIGROS
Enrolled to an Absolute beginner intensive course (5 days a week x 4 weeks)
Pros: + Professional service + nice and clean premises + following a book + speaking only in italian during the course Cons: - 2 instructors were losing connection between themselves - absolute beginner was definitely a little above for absolute beginners
Scuola ILI
Enrolled to an A2 course (2 days a week x 8 weeks)
Pros: + Welcoming & warm environment Cons: - No book followed - weak teaching material (exercises in plain text or photocopies) - weak follow-ups on homeworks - courses does not start/end with levels, they enroll you on an ongoing course - too many english (and other languages) spoken during the course
