My son has lost his glasses we are pretty sure at school. The trouble is no one at the school can find them. They are not ordinary glasses, he has Irlen Syndrome www.irlen.com and they are about CHF1000 per pair. We have house insurance with AXA and they are saying that loss isn't covered? RANT - What is the point of having house insurance? Any ideas - would they be covered by the School's insurance?
Maybe a bit simplistic, but did the supplier/manufacturer offer insurance when they were purchased?
My glasses from Fielmann came with insurance IIRC - they cost best part of 700 (I think) - had a lens replaced, that fell out and broke, free of charge.
If they're not found and replaced, may be worth getting them/making sure that they are specifically covered.
The lenses are specially made in the USA, unfortunately Irlen Syndrom isn't recognised at the moment in Switzerland, although the IV are looking into it!
Insurances are like that, aren't they. You will not be the first one not to read all the small print and find out exceptions too late. This time I think you may have no choice. Then go and visit AXA and sit down with them to check what is covered or not - and get all special items of high value insured as specific items, be they jewellery, watches, cameras, sports equipment, etc. We were stung once in the past too.
There are insurance companies here that cover this sort of loss outside the home, at least I am fairly sure ours does bit may need to see if glasses are. I know bikes and that sort of thing are.
Not to hijack your thread, but I looked at the link in your original post, and some of the symptoms mentioned are things we've been struggling with for years with one of our kids.
If you could take a few minutes to give some details on how your son's condition was diagnosed, and what sort of results you've seen with his treatment, I'd really appreciate it.
The difference with the glasses was that he struggled with reading one page in a book, to reading 10 pages without stopping! Please get your child tested, see Irlen Syndrome PM if you want to.
Why should the school be liable for your son's loss of his glasses? No liability, no insurance coverage.
You could check with your insurance company if a valuables insurance is possible for your son's next pair of glasses. We have for example a valuables insurance for our musical instruments and the premium is rather reasonable since a loss of our musical instruments is very unlikely. The same should be applicable to special glasses although a child's glasses might be a different story ... I hope in any case that your son's glasses will turn up again.
what about loss and damage in Switzerland, if I break a vase, it is an accident, but S*it happens. I think that insurances from other countries cover this event no problem, the same can be said for mobile phones, loss is often covered as standard, I think that only Orange covers this in Switzerland as an extra. So if another pupil in the school takes the glasses and hides them, it is just unlucky!
I had another conversation with AXA today, the advisor thought that the glasses were covered but then came back to me and said they weren't. I am just about to buy some more glasses at CHF1000 - Does anyone know of a policy I could possibly purchase to cover this sort of eventuality, should it happen in the future. Two of my children have these glasses.
