lost a key-potential costs

Hi all

I have lost a key similar to this one(i believe is a master key, i am just the tenant): https://www.dormakaba.com/resource/i...ey-systems.jpg

Now, i have to prepare myself for the worst and i need to know how much would be the price to order a new one, i assume is very expensive.

Any idea would be very helpful?

Also depends on where you lost it, if you lost the key on the other side of town with no info on it so it can't be traced it would be outrageous to replace the locks and just a new key can be made. If you lost it in front of the house and it now is gone you better sit down before looking at the bill.

Hi OP,

I lost a "Kaba" master key 2 1/2 years ago. The cost to replace the key was CHF 1200 at that time (since they had to change the lock on the front/common door and replace the encrypted key).

Luckily, we had renter's insurance which covered this replacement cost less CHF 200 for the deductible. If you don't have one already, I highly recommend getting a renter insurance policy. We use Baloise and pay CHF 250 per year but if you check www.comparis.ch , there are other companies offering similar coverage.

Also, if you have an idea as to where you lost your key, you can file a report as there may be a chance the key was handed into a nearby Police station.

I did file a report at the time as I had a very good idea if where I was when I lost my key. My landlord and I waited two weeks, but nothing was turned in which is why new keys were ordered and the front lock changed. Since our landlord lives above us and there are professional offices in the basement, security is/was an issue.

I found a key a couple of years ago and after trying the town hall was told to hand it into the police... and got about CHF200 as a reward when the owner showed up to claim it a few days later. In Vaud you can get a 10% reward for handing things to the police and the owner apparently said they were going to have to pay CHF 2000 to replace the locks on her house.

Moral of the story is it could cost you CHF2000 to change the locks but check the police stations near where you might have lost the key first.

Our lost key has just cost us Fr. 1500, but was also covered by our insurance. I was amazed that the insurance coffed up, but it seems normal to replace all locks even if there is a negligable chance of the key being misused.

I suppose it depends on the management company for the building.

I would say to the management company you lost it abroad down the toilet on a cruise ship or something wild. If they think it can be found and get into the building you could have to replace more locks, ie the entire building.

If the management company let you just replace the lost key, quite cheap. 50 to 100 at a guess.

I lost a key and had to replace the apartment lock, this was I think 700 bucks. Which was incredible as the work took about 1 minute. But that was just for my apt door. The letter box and cellar were different keys. If its combined then you will have to pay those lock changes to.

Depending the circumstances, and your insurance, you may be able to get the insurance to pay. I couldnt

If the key was lost nearby, it is a potential safety risk. For yourself too, by the way, because if there is a break-in and the police reports that there were no signs of a forced entry, you will likely not receive anything from your insurance.

Look after your keys and attach one of those key finder things to your keys. I gave my cleaner one for Christmas a few years ago because she'd had a scare with dropping her work keys (she cleans about 20 different homes) in a parking lot but noticed it a few feet away because here bag felt lighter. It gave her such a fright, imagine having to replace twenty sets of keys.

I rent apartments - and hate dealing with tenants who think like that. I don't make a profit on changing cylinders, they get charged out at the cost I get charged.

It's a security risk for all involved, and if the police can sho that a burglary was related to the key you lost down a toilet on a cruise, I would expect the insruance companies of everyone else in the building to come looking for you.

Give you an idea of costs (keep in mind most cylinders in Switzerland are NOT euro profile), here's the last quote I got (for cylinders, without fitting, prices in GBP as it's cheaper to order from the UK when it's not an urgent thing):

That's for a front door, back door, apartment, garage, mailbox.

A local locksmith will then charge a callout fee, hourly rate, etc.

If I get a tenant that tells porkies, that's a clear indicator that they aren't a great tenant... and my reference letter will indicate that when they look for a new apartment.
