Lunch in or around Einsiedeln

Family visiting from UK and the four of us will be continuing from Zürich to see Dionne Warwick in Lucerne. Long delayed ...

We are thinking of going via Einsiedeln to visit the Cathedral. Not the shortest route, but we are not in a rush.

I’m looking for a nice place to have lunch, in or around Einsiedeln. Looking for a place a little special or out of the ordinary. Of course I can google it, I already have with uninspiring results. I was hoping I could get a recommendation from an EFer for something nice.

My thanks in advance. .

Adler at Schindellegi is my favourite restaurant in Switzerland. Gourmet food in large portions at not unreasonable prices. Great wine cellar that’s admittedly pricey like every restaurant in Switzerland and a good whisky and digestif selection.

I think Meloncollie is a fan too.

I am indeed.

The owners are genuinely nice people who love what they do - and it shows. And oh my - the truffles, the truffles! The Adler is our 'Stammtisch'.

In Einsiedeln itself:

Across from the Kloster is the Meinradsberg - a quaint little Gasthaus with a nice garden. Menu is more on the 'gutbürgerliche side, but done well. I seem to remember hearing that the ownership might have recently changed, though, it has been several years since I was there last. It was my go-to for lunch after a Kloster visit.

I've heard that the new Greek restauant on the Hauptstrasse is good, but I have not been there yet myself.

If you are into 'Güggeli im Chörbli' the Schifflände is something of an Einsiedeln institution. Closer to the train station than the Kloster. Busy and boisterous.

Actually, any of the restuarants with outdoor seating along the road across from the Kloster will be fine. It's nice to sit outside and people watch.

For something different, there is the Milchmanufaktur: As the name implies, it's cheese. There is a Schaukaserei, and a small restaurant. Not really convenient to the center/Kloster, not in the 'pretty' part of town. But fun if you are a cheesehead.

If you want coffee and a sweet , Einsiedeln is choc-a-bloc with little cafes. Tulipani, Schefer, Drei Herzen, Cioccolatino to name a few along the Hauptstrasse or near the Kloster.

Further out of town, actually in Egg, is the other Meinrad - Gasthaus St Meinrad. Pretty setting, sort of 'upscale gutbürgerliche', nicely done. Too long a hike from the Kloster if you are only stopping by the town, so you'd need a car to get there.

Wherever you go, do make sure you check opening times. IIRC, most restuarants in Eindiedeln close one or two days during the week - not all on the same days, many are not open all day long. And then make sure that your visit doesn't fall on an Einsiedeln holiday.

FYI, if you go on a Friday you can meander through the Wochenmarkt:
