Lycamobile tethering

Hi guys,

I have got a lycamobile sim and enabled the 1GB internet bundle to use it in a wifi dongle to internet tether other devices.

Unfortunately it does not seem to work from the dongle as well as from an android and iOs device.

Does anyone of you know if Lyca blocks tethering practises?

Thanks

Ale

You may want to look at: http://www.google.com/cse?sitesearch...ing&gsc.page=1

And here from their terms and conditions, which is open to some interpretation in the English version:

Terms and conditions:

Lycamobile value packs allows customers to access to mobile internet on mobiles , allowance valid for 30 days including the date of activation. The Data Value Pack is purchased via a one-off payment, taken from the customers' top-up balance. Any other usage will be charged at a standard rate of 10 Rp/MB. 4G availability is subject to handset model and location.

Thanks. I had seen that part, but I thought it was a standard disclaimer they use. It was working last year for me (with another lyca sim) hence I was asking for others' feedbacks.

Thanks for your reply.

Could you share if this tethering works for you for lycamobile?

I am considering to buy a surf package from lycamobile prepaid and use it on my phone as personal hotspot.

Has anyone experience to share? Can the package be terminated after 1 month? I just need a temporary solution for one month. Thanks!

its a pay as you go package, so if you don't have money it will terminate automatically, alternatively you can cancel the auto renew by:

- creating an online account and then cancelling auto renew online or

- dial *190# before the expiry date and follow the instructions or

- call Customer Services on 077 900 01 22

Thanks. Have you tried using the surf package of Lycamobile to set up Personal Hotspot with iphone?

I can confirm that it does not work with my iphone 6 plus

Thanks. I tried too. I could activate "Personal Hotspot" but no wifi accessible (I did not even have the option to set wifi password etc., as I read online). Is it the same situation like yours?

nope, I am not even given the option of a personal hotspot. When i put in my sunrise card, it appears again.

The tethering function works with my Lumia 930 and with my Redmi 2A.

I have 2 Lyca number before. Tethering works on both.

But i just recently ported one of them to another carrier.

Interesting. Are you having a prepaid lycamobile? How did you set the password for the wifi?

As said with my Iphone I could turn on the Personal Hotspot. Connection could be established with my ipad but somehow no wifi....

Lycamobile provides only prepaid/Pay as you go plan.

Its there in the setting of the phone.

Activate the WiFi Hotspot and set a custom password or use the one generated by phone .

Have you tried the sim card using another phone to test the personal hotspot?

Anyway, in the Lyca T&C, it will not allowed tethering.

Cheers,

K

p.s

Oh. I remember that i also tested it on a THL T100s. It also works!

Exactly here I did not have the option to do so. I could activate "Personal Hotspot", then it asked me about bluetooth which I switched on too....but in no way a password for wifi can be set...

Do you subcribe the "surf" package? I have no package currently. Could it be the reason?

[QUOTE=stamplover;2416780] I am currently using their Surf 1Gb data package.

Before i ported my main number, i used their EU19 package.

This is my screen on the Personal Hotspot. As you can see, it is turned on now and said discoverable. Yet, I was not asked about the wifi password whatsoever but only about turning on bluetooth or using USB. When my ipad gets connected, I can't use wifi...Could anyone enlighten me?

I can normally use my iphone to surf. I read somewhere on other threads that mobile internet of Lycamobile can be activated. Do I need to do it? I think it is the last thing I haven't tried...

I don't know about the iPhone but tethering on lycamobile sure works on Android phones

The only thing that I can think about is the roaming issue with lycamobile, it could be that iphones do not allow tethering when using roaming data or in this case what is called "national roaming".

It is an issue which has been discussed here , although in this case was not confirmed in the test.

I phoned customer support today after I've unsuccessfully tried to connect my android phone to two otherwise functioning VPNs (with the built-in client)

It looks to me like they're blocking VPNs, too - which might effectively hide the fact that you're tethering

They confimed that they do not allow using your phone as a wifi router

I told them I will cancel my subscription - as a professional user doing critical support I do need to be able to connect to VPNs and with my laptop any any time while hitting the road.

Still, I found a way to get around that restriction (and to completely encrypt my traffic on top of that):

Needed:

- A remote access via ssh to any server out there. This can be bought by very little money - just look for VPS, virtual server offerings

- Server Auditor, one of the many ssh clients for Android

- Ad-hoc wifi activated (your phone becomes a wifi router like this)

Your ssh client needs to be able to do "dynamic port forwarding" which is also known as SOCKS proxy server. On the command line that would equal to

ssh -D : user@server

e.g.

ssh -D 192.168.43.1:9999 user@server

Your laptop can now connect to the wifi on the phone

What you now need to do, and this varies depending on the OS/Browser couple you're using, is setting the proxy to be

- enabled

- type SOCKS

- pointing to e.g. 192.168.45.1 port 9999

Enjoy surfing the web with stealth tethering. For Lycamobile's point of view you are connected with your phone to a server via ssh and there's traffic on this link. Of course, if all of a sudden your usage is bursting, they will detect this as an unusual pattern. Ramp up slowly!

The AU policy state that they will cut your connection even if they suspect you of tethering - no proof required

Generally speaking mobile carriers prevent end users of their services

from using their mobile as a hotspot via way of a mobile service internet profile that gets installed on your device. This is generally only used on iPhones from my experience. As some windows mobile, and android devices are free to use lycamobile as a hotspot as they see fit

so short story:

do you have an iPhone: hotspot = NO

do you have android, windows mobile, blackberry, other: hotspot = YES

The easiest thing to do is to get a WIFI router, stick in lycamobile sim card.

Voila internet access for all your devices. (yeah i know not handy)

Cheers
