Mail box name plates in Basel?

They can in Vaud, it's regulated and the gérance can use that against you, and "fine you" or justify eviction.

Don't know if they go that far, but they complained to me in writing and they were right, I was not respecting the written rules of the gérance and of the Canton.

My bad.

I was in one building where the names by the door looked to be on etched glass, backlit so it glowed. It looked great, but I'll bet it wasn't cheap.

Thank you, guys! That is very helpful.

Our name plates are dark letters engraved on silver.

Is this possible to do at a cheaper option (like a shop) rather than the extortionate amount required by my landlord for his supplier?

Yes, you can get them done anywhere, just as long as they match your neighbours' nameplates. Try Mr Minit, keycutters/shoe repairers, or better still, look for a store in Germany.

I did mine on www.signomatic.co.uk

Two doorbell signs and a mailbox sign for 7GBP delivered. They were quick and good.

I made 3 nice labels by putting sticky notes over cardboard and then laminating it with masking tape to protect it from the weather... Got complaint email from landlord that other tenants are not happy about this after a few weeks. Guess it all depends where you are and on the concentration/age of the Swiss people in your building. My concentration is high and pretty old.

Get the bus from Basel to Weil-am-Rhein and buy some name plates there. Look for a key cutting shop or kiosk. Take the exact measurements with you!

And take a close up photograph of your neighbours' name plates, to get the same appearance (text & font).

I expect the plates are made from aluminium rather than silver...

Most Swiss house name plates are platinum. The aluminium ones are a bit gauche (too shiny) and the silver ones tarnish between the daily polishes.
