My parner and I are thinking of visiting the Mainau area of Souther Germany this summer - mid July. We are looking at all of the tourist stuff and are developing some plans.
Now looking for personal recommendations of what we absolutely must see and also which we should avoid like a plague of lotus.
We’ve picked Mainau as there is a Shakespeare production we would like to see. The ADG castle tour.
Most suggestions will be much appreciated and really goods ones will be rewarded with a virtual beer…Here’s a taster
Mainau is a tiny island with a castle and a botanic garden on it. It probably takes a few hours to visit. I was there only once as a teenager and found it super boring - but then I am not that much into flowers.
The area makes for a good visit though. City of Constance is very nice - avoid Saturdays if possible. Take a boat/ferry across the lake and visit Meersburg, Mainau and Uberlingen (there is a cool site of historic stilt houses in the lake). In the lower part of the lake downstream of Constance you have the island of Reichenau and the town of Stein am Rhein that are worth a visit.
2-3 days are sufficient. Could go by train to Constance and from there mostly by ship.
