Making a larger purchase online

I need (want?) to buy something, and online is about 2%-20% cheaper (from a reputable dealer) than buying in a store.

That said, as the purchase price isn't what I would normally spend, I doubt my credit card would work (25k or so in a single transaction).

A limit increase seems like a heavy hammer as I don't plan on spending this much on a single transaction in future.

Bank transfer would work - but doesn't have the safety of a credit card...

Thoughts?

Is it from within Switzerland? Stranger things have happened but they might agree to invoice you after delivery. Or maybe agree to pay up to the limit of your card and ask them to invoice the rest upon delivery?

Sadly no - the dealers I found as US or UK based. One is Swiss, but the customer service leaves a bit to be desired...

Why don't you transfer 25k to you credit card account and it should work out.

If you have doubts, call your credit card company in advance but I have done this before.

CC companies have agreed to increase my limit temporarily for a single purchase. I think I was buying flight tickets which were more than my intentionally low limit. Give them a call.

Yeap, you can just pay more into the credit card, and then you get to have your limit plus the cash the you've provided them. No limit increases necessary - I've done this on a couple of occasions.

I'm an idiot - didn't think of calling them. Just called them, and they gave me three options:

1. If I give them the name of the jeweler, they will authorize a one-off transaction over the limit to that jeweler

2. I can pre-topup the credit card

3. I can fill out some form for a credit limit increase, and then either keep it like that or ask to reduce it after

Very helpful! Now to actually pick a supplier. I still have hope for the Swiss one, but they really are not being that helpful... replies are slow... and for some stones, they don't even have pictures on the site.
