Malaysia driving license

I would like to know if Malaysia or Hong Kong driving license can be converted to permanent Swiss driving license?

I heard some ppl said that, we need to convert my driving license within the first 12 mths. Once I have stayed more than 12 mths, I will required to do a whole new driving test and driving license. Is this true?

Welcome to the forum. Have you asked your local equivalent of the Road Transport Department ?

You can do it without a test if you have a driving license from either:

- EU/EFTA country

- Andorra, Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, Korea, Croatia, Marocco, Monaco New Zealand, San Marino, Singapore, Taiwan, Tunesia, USA

You can find all relevant information here: http://www.stva.zh.ch/internet/ds/st...aw_auslfa.html (in German)

I got Malaysian Driving License, in order to have Swiss Driving Lincence I have to pass the Practical Driving Test. It is recommended to have few sessions with driving school before the actual test. Once you passed you will get temporary driving license which valid for 2 years, within 2 years you need to attend 2 courses which also attended by Swiss who just got their license. Once its done you can convert the license to permanent license which valid for the rest of your life!

If you failed the practical test, you have to start from zero i.e theory, first aid course etc.

It's required to take a test. But you can do by changing Hong Kong license->UK license->Swiss license. Then you won't need any test in this procedure.

is it difficult the test??in 2 years u have a temporary license ..how many time u have to attend for the course??

Are you sure about this? I also had a license from a country that could not be directly converted to a Swiss license. I also had to do a practical driving test but got my permanent license after I passed the practical. And this was only last year.

Since when do you only get a temporary license after a kontrollfahrt?

This gives me hope. I'm just abit worried because the road rules are quite different from the Malaysian road rules. Also I'm still not over the whole driving on the other side factor!

I am a Malaysian just moved here a few months ago fr anthr EU country but never had any EU license. I changed my Malaysian license few days ago, just need to do a 30 minute practical driving test with Zurich Strassenverkehrsamt. I applied 3 month ago and got appointment for the test. While waiting sometimes I rent a car and drove in the city, that was my only 'training'.... Didn't use any of the driving school instructor... Only self-learning, observed other drivers, and took a lot of photos of junctions, signage etc then tried to understand them, get my German office colleague to translate all signage in German etc...

During the test, by the way I use a rented car, the instructor spoke very little initially, I requested English speaking instructor but could not get a guarantee. Anyway the instructor I got can speak good English but he chose not to speak the first 15min except told me TURN LEFT PLEASE, RIGHT PLEASE.. I drove to a few 30km/h streets, crossed tram line a few times etc... It was ok, you just need to be careful of everything ard you...and for me it was 8am on Monday...so really have to be careful of buses, trams, car, bikes and pedesterians and school children.

Anyway he was firm but nice, told me a couple of driving tips in Switzerland during the last 10min on the way back. Finally I was done by 9am after some paperwork and next day I received Swiss license and my Malaysian driving license with a small red sticker stated NOT VALID IN SWITZERLAND

What an experience but happy to get it over....

Hey congrats to you! That's so awesome. I have yet to make an application seeing as to how my international drivers licence is valid for a year and I've only been here 5 weeks! I have to admit though what really scares me is that the interior of the car is the other way around, I think I could handle driving on the other side but having the interior flipped adds to it all.

But hey congratulations again and here's to you wei!

To get a UK license you have to sign that you have been a resident for at least 6 months, that could be an issue & have taxaction consequances for some but not all people.

Thanks..... And welcome to Swiss you still have a lot of time! Probably you can plan to take the test after the winter is over....can help wrt visibility, too foggy lately in the morning. All the best

[QUOTE=MFZ;1414316]Thanks..... And welcome to Swiss

Your best bet would be to email one of the hire companies and ask them!
