...am I paying just for the name?
I have a 10 year old Dakine backpack which has started to run out of space so I was looking for a news hiking backpack. Came across ones from Mammut and the material was really thin in comparison to my old Dakine backpack.
Mammut material felt thin similar to the backpack selling in Aldi under "Crane" label for CHF20-30.
For the price Mammut wants I was expecting much better material. Could it be that super dooper modern material just feels fragile but is very strong
I remember reading-
Upper fabric- 210D Nylon fancy Ripstop
Base fabric- 420D Nylon
I have a large trekking expandable one, 70l, and it's great, super light, it delivers. It's not only material that might feel certain way, ie comparable, but seams, zippers, buckles and finishing have to perform, not let water in, etc. And it's worth the price. Aesthetically, nope, ugly. US ones are cooler, Lowe Alpine is the best investment, but they ran out of the size I needed.
I went to the transa outlet in josefstrasse today and they had quite a lot of backpacks downtairs.
I would never pay 150chf for a,backpack, but when it is half price I feel like it might be worth it...
It may be that the particular rucksack you are looking at is designed specifically for climbing/mountaineering. In that case, light-weight is more important than long-term durability.
If you want a rucksack for backpacking then it may not be the best bet.
(I'm guessing here as you didn't state what Mammut model it is).
No climbing just hiking. The backpack was clearly labelled for hiking...one day to multi day hikes.
Upper fabric- 210D Nylon fancy Ripstop
Base fabric- 420D Nylon
Does that say anything to you? Oh! found this link.
Edit 1- I also like to use them for weekly shopping :-P
Edit 2-
Saw an army bag for CHF120, seemed tough as nails (35-40L guessing) . Might be good for hiking and multi use. Was made of canvas/nylon type of material so might get soaked in rain (although I mainly hike in good weather conditions).
CHF120 seemed steep for army bag though.
Decisions decisions
You could also try the "fundsaxhenverkauf" in wollishofen for second hand luggage. They always have a variety of options. I do not mind buying second-hand as I find that if something has survived one owner, it probably does not have any major weaknesses. But definitely carefully inspect your second-hand purchase.
The day-sack seems to fit your requirements. You can always buy an inner waterproof lining, TBH you should buy a lining even if you have the most expensive brand.
I assume you mean the army pack right? It was similar to this one. Looks more useful and rugged compared to the Mammut stuff which I find bit too pretentious for my taste. Will make final decision tomorrow when shops open.
Thanks for listening
In post No. 5 the image says good for hiking/winter hiking but not for ALL DAY USE. What does that exactly mean? If it is good enough for hiking then why not for all day casual use?
I'm guessing that it means that it not exactly the rucksack:
- you would take to work (i.e. smart casual)...
- it is larger than what you would use for "city backpack", i.e. more than 15, 20, 25l,
- has features that you do not need in the city, i.e. hydration system, etc.
Mammut itself features so-called all day/everyday use packs as having features such as laptop compartments, etc. ( http://www.mammut.ch/en/backpacks_ty...ifunction.html )
