Marriage Tax Penalty with unemployed partner

Hi,

Me (M) and my partner (F) are planning to get married in a few months. We learnt that the city hall can imply a marriage tax penalty upon marriage, which can be substantial. They usually do this by assuming a combined income that's higher than the individual income.

However, my partner is currently unemployed. They are also from a foreign country, so they will get their residence in Switzerland through marriage.

Will there be any marriage penalty in our case? If no,

Is there a way for us to inform the city hall that she is unemployed, and hence they should not compute a tax penalty by assuming that combined income is higher than my individual income.

best regards.

No worries, your taxable income is currently divided by 1 (you alone), when you marry it will be divided by 1.8 (you 1 , your wife 0.8).

Each child is 0.5 additional.

So your taxes should go down.

They will ask you when you apply for her permit if she is employed.

It will be fine

And..... congratulations 😊

The tax penalty is only for two high earners.

One high, one low (or no), you will pay far LESS than being single.
