Maybe I should invest in a fund. How much are the fees

Please go easy on me, I’m just putting my toes in the water. Lets say I have 50k to invest. I find a fund (lets say managed by Pictet) and I buy it through UBS. Lets say I make 5% in the next year, so 2500 profit. I have done a bit of research but I can’t get a straight answer. How much of the 2500 do I lose in fees ? (And what’s the tax due ?)

ah.. ignore the tax question

I guess because not a professional investor. Main criteria here is that the 2’500 CHF in capital gains are not half your annual income.

About prices, I assume you would use the retail e-trading product, see the prices here:

Ah .. thanks.. I was looking on the UBS ‘buy product’ pages…

Wow, so on 50k I’ll pay ubs 375chf to ‘buy’ and then 4x175=700 per year just to ‘look after’ the account (even though Pictet are the fund managers)

So in the first year I’ll lose 1075chf in fees to ubs out of a 5% return of 2500chf. On top of fees going to Pictet. That’s crazy. I guess this is why everyone points to other means of buying funds.

Am I missing something ‘obvious’ ?

UBS is particularly expensive… yes, I went through similar calculations some years ago, and I decided to invest myself directly on funds. UBS fees are also different if you want an ‘active’ , ‘medium’, vs ’ passive’ management of your investments…

The fees charged by Swiss banks are a rip off. They often charge you to buy, charge you to sell, charge you for holding it and then the fund might charge you their own fees on to.

Cheapest is to use a cheap broker like IBKR and buy low cost ETFs which charge just a fraction of a percent in fees.

That was very helpful. I’ll set up an account with IBKR and wait for the impending market crash so I can buy cheap

By the way.. in 1999 I was working in a leading ecommerce software company with lots of to be vested shares that were then worth a lot (Broadvision).. when I could sell them in 2002 they were worthless.. so I didn’t lose anything.. but I lost out compared to others… that e-comm crash looks ominiously like todays pending AI crash.. but.. maybe that’s another thread

Feel free to post about AI crash in any thread (joking).

I belong to the cult of Impending AI Crash (not joking).

You should have perhaps adjusted ChatGPT to allow for a more Swiss-based answer…
