Medical School in Switzerland

Hello there!

I have had an interest in studying medicine in Switzerland. I would like go attend medical school in Switzerland, as I hear that one does not have to go through the process of having "Pre-Med" and other complications as in the US, where one who goes into the Pre-Medical major is definitely not ensured that they would receive a place in medical school. I had heard that to go through medicine, it would be straight through and six - eight years? I have also heard of some advantages of studying there, with cheaper tuition compared to the US, and that factor of certainty that once you are in such a program, you won't be faced with the daunting task of having to go find another institution to accept you, since acceptance in American medical schools has become ridiculously difficult to obtain. I do understand that school would be in German, but I have lived a year in Germany and can speak German up to B2 level (though I will definitely work to achieve C1), and I do hope to be able to obtain a German course in my university studies if possible, as it seems that Germany had that to offer to foreigners studying at their universities. I don't believe I would mind having to face exams to be licensed in both Switzerland and the US. It has been a great dream of mine to study and live in Switzerland for the longest time, and so I do hope it is possible.

Would I be eligible to attend university in Switzerland? I am an American who will be graduating high school in May. And how would I pursue the course of action that I am setting out to do?

Thank you so much for reading!

Hello,

Here or here you can find everything you need to know about studying in Switzerland.

Good luck!

The short answer is no, you cannot study medicine here. From the CRUS wesbite that Ramtin(e) linked to:

“Exceptions are study programmes in medicine (human medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine) and chiropractic as well as in human movement and sports sciences.”

These courses are restricted to Swiss/Lichtenstein nationals and other people who have lived in these countries for at least 5 years.

Try the UK universities, you already speak the language and they love foreigners paying full fees! They have the same model that once you get on to a medical degree course you can complete it (unless, I guess, you are failing then you might get kicked off or asked to convert to a science undergraduate degree). You will only be an hour and a half away from holidays in Switzerland :-)

Yep go to the UK.

You will study in English and it is a 5 year course with no previous uni degree required.

You can't study in Switzerland as you are not a Swiss citizen or C permit holder, and the course wouldn't be in English.

For the UK apply at ucas.com

Your application needs to be in by Oct 15 2014 for medicine courses if you want to start in Sept 2015.
