I have imported my 1959 Daimler Dart which is standard and so has passed the MFK.
However I want to make a couple of safety related changes:
1. Adding Hazard warning lights
2. Adding seatbelts.
Neither of these would have been fitted at manufacture. If I do fit them will I be able to pass the MFK with them or will I have to remove them every time?
Can anyone provide a link to the exact MFK rules on what is tested, so the details on each point looked at and what the requirements are for that point?
Thanks for your replies - it is a very nice car and the V8 engine sounds fantastic.
Based on this for future MFKs I will keep the hazard lights in place as they would be a nuisance to remove due to the wiring modifications to fit them. The seatbelts will be a matter of bolting and unbolting so easy enough to remove so I will take these out as I'm not sure how the MFK will view seatbelts bolted into a fibreglass structure, so it is easier to not have them for the test.
The guys at the MFK are a bunch of idiots... i would put the stuff on and only remove for the re-test if so requested.
I have a stock 1981 Harley that has highway pegs (footrests in the front) from the factory as standard. I have the original sales folder, official HD shop manual, all showing the highway pegs. (the ones in the chrome bit by the side stand)
But no, the idiot doing the MFK knows for sure they are not standard and must be removed. So they were taken of for the re-test and immediately put ba.... no of course i am not doing anything illegal
If your car is officially classified as "veteran", I would ask at the "Strassenverkehrsamt", what kind of modifications you can do without losing the privileges.
I see a lot of veteran cars pootling about with, have to call it, snap on indicators and seatbelts, perhaps this would be an idea instead of changing the car and potentially damaging it ́s value.
Thanks for the replies. The car is a veteran, but adding removable safety items will not alter the value as they can be moved without leaving any evidence that they were present.
The wiring change for the hazard lights is done by plugging a module between the indicator wiring, no wires would need to be cut, it's a pain to do working under the dash, but nothing more.
The seat belts bolt into existing chassis\body points, though a hole will need to be made in the carpets.
I'm thinking of importing an old UK car to CH, so this thread caught my eye.
What does it mean that the Dart was 'standard' so the MFK was 'no problem'?
Isn't there a list of things (modifications) that need to be applied to a UK car to pass an MFK ? Is it a different list if the car is more than X years old ? (and what is X ?)
I've looked on the BL MFK site but couldn't find any details. Anyone have a good link ?
unlikely to need any changes except maybe a door/wing mirror on the other side if it doesn't have one and it RHD. speedo must show km/h and headlights dip on the correct side. though those are not 'epoca' specific items.
very hard to tell until you take it there. they can decide to take exception and the most peculiar things if they want to be difficult. and its quite dependent on what the car is.
all that said it would have to be pretty perfect to pass first time without any changes. the standards are pretty high and they can be very picky. i've put several cars though and never have they had zero issues first attempt.
