MFK Question: beleuchtung nebellampen einstellen ungenügend

So I got this red line on my MFK pre-check:

Beleuchtung nebellampen einstellen ungenügend

From what I can tell - my car has two fog lamps in front (low in the bumper), and one at the back (left side). The right side does not appear to have a fog lamp bulb.

Any ideas what that line means?

It sounds like the curve of the lights is not correct.

Means your fog lights are not properly adjusted. But don't know if they can be adjusted. Did you have an accident? Also who did the precheck. What is a precheck anyway?

Well, the Ordinance on the technical requirements for road vehicles (DE)

https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/1…5_4425_4425/de

First, is it about the front or rear fog light(s)?

In the law, rear lights are referred as Schluss beleuchtung, and read fog lights specifically as Nebel schuluss lichter, so it seems it’s about the front fog lights.

Front fog lights are optional (fakultative), so if they don’t work, this is not an issue for MFK. It should mean that they are working, but working outside the regulations for optional equipment.

So check the chapter in the law Lichter, Richtungsblinker und Rückstrahler

  1. Color? White, or light yellow (hellgelb)
  2. Max. 40 cm from the outermost fixed part of the vehicle (measured horizontally)
  3. Min. 25 cm from the ground level.
  4. Maximum intensity at 25m ( I doubt is this one because it’s hard to measure).
  5. All other measures about the angles the lights should have (I also doubt they measured this).

I’d say check the light color, vertical and horizontal position of the front fog lights. It is known that several car models do not meet the Swiss MFK regulations. For example, this story about Mustangs http://www.mustang-cruising.ch/phpbb…pic.php?t=5531

So, the easiest would be to find out if your car model has specific issues to pass the Swiss MFK due to the position of front fog lamps.

Pre-check is a service TCS offers - as they do the MFK, they also do a non-official MFK where they check everything... but do not register it on the MFK book, so if anything doesn't pass - you can still drive around until it's fixed.

In my case, a brake light (fixed), and this fog lamp issue that I cannot figure out.

Car's never been in an accident, and I've never changed the fog lamp bulbs from new (as rarely use them!)

This is on a Dacia Duster - I'll ask the dealership if they've had issues in the past...

Why not ask the TCS? They did the test!

it's a EU vehicle. There should not be any problem with position of fog lights in the front of the car. So, probably a misalignment of the lights. No one would care if one of the lights point down, but if it's pointing a bit higher than normal there may be a problem. This is normal as cars age.

This is consistent with the "einstellen ungenügend" part. But, better ask to the person who made the check.

I did - the lady said "ask any garage - they can explain it to you". Wasn't so helpful... probably because my German sucks and she couldn't explain it in English, Italian nor French.

In all probability, the alignment of the Nebellampen ( front ) is out of whack and has to be readjusted. The Nebelleuchte (back) is not involved and AFAIK generally is only present in singular form. As in most/many cars only have one Rückfahrleuchte (reversing light)

Some service. Don't pay the bill until they explain it to you.

In any case the MFK will most likely not even check the fog lights.

I think it's an alignment thing...

1) Color? White, or light yellow (hellgelb)

> Stock white

2) Max. 40 cm from the outermost fixed part of the vehicle (measured horizontally)

> Can't really measure this accurately - but it's close to 10cm

3) Min. 25 cm from the ground level.

> Around 40cm from the ground, so it isn't this

4) Maximum intensity at 25m ( I doubt is this one because it's hard to measure).

> Doubt it's this too..

5) All other measures about the angles the lights should have (I also doubt they measured this)

> I think it may be this - but to adjust on a duster requires removing the wheel and the mudguard.... so this is one for the weekend I guess. I just need to find what the right angles are!

Right angle is 90 degrees, but possibly not the correct angle.

It means your fog lights shine too high up (or your dipped beams are too low).

https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/1…4425/de#art_76

https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/1…1/lvl_7/lvl_73

In english, the fog light beam is not allowed to be above the dipped beam. Fog light and dipped beam must have a 10% fall off, fog lights can also have a 2% fall off if they are mounted not higher than 1 m above ground (like most fog lights are).

You can test the fall of using a wall which is 5 m or 10m away from the lights. Measure the height of your fog lamps. The location of the filament is relevant. Then, on the wall, tape a line which is 10 cm or 20 cm below the measured height. That’s the limit for your fog light beam. If they are above you must adjust them (or permanently disable their functions).

Thank you so much! That I can now sort out this weekend as well now

I'll also need to put back solid brake discs (I knew this was going to be an issue - but was hoping that as I was fitting OEM drilled discs it would pass).... and then book a "real" MFK.

Tried emailing a few garages for quotes... wow it's hard to get a quote here from an official dealership. I got replies from a German dealership, and a small indy - but from RRG (the Zurich dealer where I bought the car), nothing.

Nope, would need a paper depending on number and diameter of holes. See ASA 2a pages 17 - 20 https://asa.ch/it/biblioteca-online/direttive/

Indeed - discovered that too late. For 40 bucks, I've ordered some solid discs and will just fit those.

Will refit the drilled ones before the next rally as I leave Switzerland (as it's anyhow a small job to swap)

on my side you have to announce if you are changing brake disks. They might invite you for an inspection. This was a surprise to me

Only in certain cases. If you replace like for like no check is needed.

Please read the above linked ASA 2a. It is all explained there.

Thanks for information. I thought it is something canton specific. The form had “Disques de freins”, but without much details.
