Migros Subito thief

Didn ́t we have a thread a while ago from a lady who let her son scan stuff and got caught because her kid forgot to scan?

Yes we did and she was outraged that she got a telling off by the Migros staff because of it.

Imagine what she'd have been like if the police had put her in handcuffs.

They do in Italy as well.

Tom

I would never use that, I'm sure I'd forget often. I only use those that have you be your own cashier.

For me the cart would need to register by itself what's placed in the cart.

I have had the "control" as they call it done to me about 4 times over the last two years. They just put everything through the till. I have no idea as to what happens if the scanned items and "tilled" items don't match, for obvious reasons.

I have to admit though, that you do have a slight worry that maybe you forgot something, but so far it hasn't materialised.

More than once, while emptying my cart onto the band, I have realised that at some point I switched carts with some unsuspecting shopper.

after reading this post

i won't touch this self - scanning - paying system...

its really worrisome...from a careless person like me

On purpose?

Certainly not. I have no need whatsoever for extra large support pantyhose. It wasn't by any chance your cart was it?

Self scanning isn't a new concept and the ground rules are fairly well established. I first used it >25 years ago in Waitrose (UK), where it was available to John Lewis account holders only, have been using it at Géant in France for years, and more recently at E.Leclerc and Migros.

So in all that time I've got something wrong, shown up on a rescan, perhaps half a dozen times (and at least once in favour of the shop). They're not in the slightest bit bothered, and in fact they may not even mention it; all it does is increase your probability of getting rescanned next time, and presumably the more often you get it wrong the more often you'll be rescanned.

This case seems to be completely different from a casual error, though, and the assumption is that the level of mis-scanning was such that it could only have been intentional. Theft is theft, regardless of how easy someone makes it for you to think you can get away with it.

Edit: I'm also talking about hand-held scanners, not self service checkouts.

also the Scanner holder on the trolley stands in a risky location: if you have a child in the seat, he'll spend the whole shopping time playing with the scanner and messing up the list.

Go explain the manager/police that your 2yo erased the meat...

Yesterday my OH complimented the new cheese that I had bought.

"What new cheese?"

"The one with Bärlauch"

Well I didn't buy any cheese with Bärlauch! When I checked the cheese, it was bought at the cheese counter, and I never buy cheese at the counter.

So obviously the cheese was placed in the wrong trolley.

Which leads me to wonder, if there was a spot check done, would Migros believe me? What if it was a more expensive item? How is it possible to have control over who is putting stuff in your trolley on a busy Saturday ?

She does it between fashion shoots.

If circumstances mean you are not in a position to use self-scanning, there are manned tills in most supermarkets. There an employee of the shop will scan your articles for you with no extra charge.

This is just stupidity though... why would you trust a child to correctly scan all of the items without checking if they had done it correctly at the end? It's simply irresponsible behaviour and serves her right.

Interesting point. I wonder also what would happen if somebody took a scanned item from your trolley; I've seen people take things from trollies because they can't be bothered to find them themselves.

What are the chances that a "I scanned this, but it was missing when I got home" claim will work next time you're in the supermarket?

One of my reasons for using the normal checkout is that it gives me a chance to notice any poisonous stuff (Joghurt, Coconut) in the cart as I am putting them on the band. Better safe than dead is my motto.

We always use the scanner, I love it as I can pack my bags as I am shopping. Chances are no one is going to put stuff in my bag when I am not looking Have been checked several times in the past 3 years both a Migros and Coop and never had an issue. The only thing that is annoying is that at Coop the self check-out is the same machine as the Subito check-out, so when there are a lot of people using the self checkout, you have a bit of a wait.

The shop is not going to call the cops because you forgot to scan one or two items out of a hundred.. I believe that if you miss an item you will be more likely to be controlled again.. I guess if you are consistently stealing they may take action.. Obviously if you try to walk out after scanning nothing, that's different.

Personally i use COOP 99% of the time and get controlled maybe 1/10 times.. I can't see the pattern though, I've been controlled on 3 items/10chf before and not controlled on a hundred items 500chf.. Generally after a successful control they give me a 10x super points voucher. So I'm happy to get it right.

You guys made such a fuss about the self check, I decided to try it last Friday.

It's awesome, specially at lunch time when the Migros has only 2 cashiers working and there is always a line blocking both. I got my three items scanned and paid in 3 minutes. Perfect!

I don't get how anyone forgets to scan anything. You have your shopping in the trolley or the basket. You take item from basket, scan it, place inside your own bag which you can position neatly on top of the shelf right there. Pay with card. Place empty basket/trolley away. Finished.

I honestly fail to see how you can forget to scan anything, other than doing it on purpose. My 8 month old can do the same procedure - pick toy from right, scan it with gums, place toy on the left...
