Milk - whats the deal?

I noticed that Coop's pasteurized milk has longer sell by dates than the pasteurized milk from Carrefour or Migros. Upon closer examination I found the label "mikrofiltriert" (micro-filtrated) on the packaging. I suspect that Coop uses some advanced filtering system which extends the shelf-life without ruining the taste.

Well as much as I hate it I have to revise my claim that 90% of Swiss buy pasteurized full cream. I still think it's true in my own little world but statistics tell a different story

It's not easy to get fresh dairy products even near the source.

We have a laiterie* in the village but it's only open from 18:00 to 18:30 M-Sat to buy dairy products. The next village has one open 1/2 hour twice a day but only three days a week.

The milk from the laiterie lasts 48 hours tops. I haven't asked them yet if they can sell raw milk. The cheese maker guy said he couldn't sell raw milk. Of course, if he knew me better I might have been able to get it. It's probably easier to buy drugs! I live next door to a farmer but I have to admit, I'm too shy to ask him for some raw milk.

Also, if you want fresh creme double you must order it 24 hours in advance so they can make it and if you want regular cream that is not UHT or if you want skimmed milk then it will be suggested that you should make it myself (with a tone that suggested "that's what everyone else does" )

Although the cheese and butter come from local producers, the yogurt and cream are all Yoplait.

*This is where all the dairy farmers drop off their milk every day. The milk gets heated (to what temp?) then is sold on to a bigger collection point. Does it get heated again after this?

So having stopped with milk, I eat more veg, green leafed anything, and eat some cheese and yoghurt, so I should be getting enough calcium. Is that enough or should one also take food supplement with extra calcium?

Fortunately for me I hate the taste of UHT too, and by the description of how it is made, that would be enough to put me off for life, if it is true about camels .....

the camel think was a joke.

You will have to do your own calculations about whether you are getting enough calcium. You need to calculate your general "needs" then see how much is contained in what you eat.

You can find lots of sources online.

www.fitday.com * is a good site. You put in all the food you ate & it analyzes your nutrition. Then you can change your diet accordingly (or not).

It says it's a diet & weight loss tool, but is does really good analysis of your nutrition and of course you don't have to use all the tools.

I have to remember sometimes this is the internet after all.

Thank God the camel thing was a joke!

Mind you with other practices like feeding cattle other dead cattle ..... one can never be 100% sure whether these things are a total hoax or if there is just a small grain of truth contained therein.

Quick question for anyone with more than one child...is there any way to get milk in a larger package than a Liter? In the US, we were able to readily buy gallons of fresh milk, and here you get these tiny containers that last our three kids about 1/2 a day

Would love any suggestions on where to get milk in a more bulk form?

Thanks !

Migros has UHT (but not fresh) milk in 2 litre packs.

get a cow - only way.

I like Aussie/NZ milk much, much, much better than Swiss milk. Swiss milk tastes very light and watery compared to the former. I don't know why...

And my Swiss partner prefers and buys UHT milk. I just couldn't believe it...

I only buy full cream Swiss milk but it's still a lot lighter more watery than the Aussie / NZ milk. Maybe it's the grass and food. Australian coffee tastes amazing (at least in the big cities) probably partly due to the tasty milk.

I personally prefer UHT milk, both for the flavor and for the packaging. I like that I can flatten out the cartons so they take less space in the bin, while the pasteurized milk tends to come in plastic bottles where the top doesn't fold as nicely.

The longer shelf life is a nice bonus, but doesn't really matter to me.

Qatar buying up all the cows. Will they be taking Swiss cows?

German cows have been flown into Qatar to be milked as Saudi Arabia's blockade of its neighbor continues. ... Importers delivered 165 Holstein dairy cows - the first of 4,000 bovines set for shipment to Qatar - late Tuesday. Qatar flew in 165 dairy cows on Tuesday from Budapest.

There's actually a site you can order raw milk delivered... will try to find it later.

EDIT: Here's one... but it wasn't the one I saw a while back when looking for farm fruits delivered:

I buy my swiss milk in germany for a fraction of the price same with swiss chocolate

Good luck with the food poisoning lottery .

Its very tricky because local farmers can eat it and not get sick but a foreigner can eat it once and get very sick

Wrong - 100% of people die after eating food ... one day

The same study also shows it's the least successful method, in most cases it takes more than 100'000 tries until it finally works.

because they are brought up on it...a bit like eating street food in India...you would most probably end up sick in bed!
