Does anyone know if MioStar is actually a Migros brand? Anyone have any positive or negative experiences with products by them? I have my eye on a very nice sewing machine but am wondering if it's worth the price, or if I should go with a Brother or Singer for that price.
Yes, Mio-star is Migros's own-brand.
But they don't actually design and make this stuff so you need to do a bit of web-research to find how which manufacturer actually makes this machine for them and then check the reviews and prices.

I do not sew but if you are in no hurry, a friend bought their sewing machine from Lidl or Aldi and were blown away by it.
They had an Elna and Phaff and she kept telling me about how good the one she got from the budget supermarket was.
Maybe it would be an idea to check their websites and see if they will be offering one in the near future..
I know Lidl had a Singer a while ago. It was pretty basic, but looked like it was a good deal. I wanted something with a few more features, and the MioStar one looks like it offers even more than I could have hoped for for the price. I really do think Tom's advice is good, and I'll try to find out who actually manufactures the MioStar.
I really have to jump in here. The Migros machine is ok but it is not a work horse. If you really sew I would suggest getting a used Bernina or Elna or Singer from a sewing machine dealer. Migros will fix their brand under warranty and thereafter, but I remember it became quite a regular thing to take the machine for repair. THe downtime, and after the warranty ran out, the cost of repair, makes me think they are pretty flimsy. We now have an ancient Bernina and although it is very limited in features, you couldn't kill it if you wanted to. Hope this helps.
Hi! We have their water boiler and it's great. We were also using one of their vacuums last month in an apartment my boyfriend's company was renting for us and it was the best I ever used. Hope it helps.
Just to clear things up. I did not say that Miostar has generally bad products. I have been twice dissapointed by their sewing machines which are probably made by one of the known brands and sold under the Miostar name.

All in German, of course and only after you pay.
But if you're serious about buying, the 3 CHF or whatever it costs is well-spent, IMO, if it prevents one from getting complete lemon.

Unfortunately, all of these reviews seem to be quite old now (2006-2009). I would hope that if such problems existed, they would have improved them by now. And all of the products they reviewed, not just the MioStar were in a lower price range than the one I'm considering. I'm wondering if that would have an effect on the quality. You get what you pay for type deal.
