Nearly three weeks ago, I let my four cats out late at night and the next day only three came back. Having done all the things that you normally do - go looking, put up lost cat posters, checked the gemeinde and cadavar house, I cannot find my cat.
However in the last week or so, I have had 3 people mention the disturbing possibility that my cat may have been stolen for someone to eat. Having done some searches on the web, there is mention of the Swiss in rural areas eating cats but it is against the law.
Has anyone heard about this before or lost cats and suspected the same thing?
Sorry for your missing cat. But I think your leg has been pulled. My girlfriend (Swiss) has never heard of anything like that, and we're very rural here. She has said that some people will eat cat food as some of it is supposed to be quite good.
Have you asked all your neighbours to look in sheds, garages and barns? they often get locked in there. Also very common is that they climb under the bonnets of cars (warm and dry) and can therefore end up a very long way from home.
We've just had 5 additions here, I think they're all spoken for though.
Years ago it was normal that people were eating cats. Particulary people from the lower middle class. I' m working in a local where most of the customers are old and some of them told me that they were eating cats in der childhood because they didn't have enough money to buy meat and because they had to many cats on their farms. And they told me as well that it's very tasty ... no big diffrence to rabbit. (I mean why not?)
But I'm sure nobody did eat up yor kitty, didn't want to scare you.
It's surprising how far pets can travel; you may also want to put posters up in vet offices farther afield. (My neighbor's cat was found about 30 km from home...)
And, is she chipped? While ANIS is supposed to contact owners when an animal is found, sometimes you have too keep calling them to check if any new reports have come in.
Never heard of the Swiss eating cats, but I guess when your starving you'd eat anything.....
A couple of years ago a new neighbour in our house block had a kitty go missing after a couple of weeks of her moving in. The kitty was never found. I might point out that our house block is 3/4 surrounded by a wood, and many is the night we hear the foxes calling to each other...
Needless to say we think the foxes are the guilty kitty eaters.......
Thank you for the responses - sorry haven't worked out how to add thanks to each person so you get a thanks rating.
I've visited the missing/found cat website and registered my details, thank you meloncollie.
Unfortunatley, I didn't bother this time to chip all four cats as I have done in the past with others. Our local vet seems to think that a fox wouldn't have got Angus as he was a big cat even though we do live near lots of woods. I'm hoping that he will still turn up but I suppose I had better get more posters out there in the neighbouring villages.
This sounds disturbing, I cannot even imagine someone in Switzerland will steal a cat to eat, I know in Africa, but here in Switzerland??
Anyway, a good friend of mine in Basel lost two cats in one month. They have been poisoned, and this is sad. One can keep the cats indoors, but that is difficult if they are used to being outside. My cat has never been outside, so it is no problem. I ask myself now, who will poison cats, and for what reason?? So terrible.
there is also the remote possibility that your cat has gone off looking for a mate. years ago, i adopted male cat who after 9 months went missing for two weeks... couldn't figure it out, but he came back eventually, fit and healthy. incidentally, he was neutered. However, the vet said that as we'd only had him a relatively short time, he felt the need to explore the surrounding areas.
however, i do also know a lady back in london who feeds the local cats... believing them to be homeless, and on occasion, i'm sure some of them are... but they keep going back to her for food that eventually, she adopts them.... so check with neighbours to see if they know anyone like this.
fingers crossed that your cat returns home soon...
Yes, I noticed after I posted. I still think that people should be aware that there is a possibility that someone crazy will just decide to poison your cat. Now I am going to get myself a strong coffee.
Since it's such a current thread, I'd like to add that 25 years ago we lost a cat. My mom claims she heard a car and someone took it. We thought then too they wanted to eat it(don't ask me why we came to this conclusion though....)
Alot of cats get poisoned from eating rats and mice (yum) that have eaten poison themselves (so said the vet); that is how our cat checked into the "Kitty Hilton" for the first time.
Her next stay was because she got shot; I do think someone did that on purpose though.
I asked my Swiss husband about this theory that the Swiss in rural areas eat cats. He said he does not believe it, but that it was common for the Italians to eat cats when he was a kid. Now I want to add, I do not believe his story.
